PROFINET & Modbus TCP now supported on Perle IDS Industrial Switches
To get Ethernet devices networked immediately, the IDS plug and play switches can be directly installed and managed via PLC, NMS, HMI or SCADA systems using PROFINET or Modbus TCP.
PROFINET and Modbus/TCP protocol support is in addition to the already comprehensive set of management functions, including MRP (IEC62439-2), management VLAN, QoS, RMON, N:1 port mirroring, local alert log and IPv6.
In the Industrial Ethernet Market, PROFINET has emerged as a leading protocol with highest market share according to Zion Market Research. Wise Guy Reports forecast the global industrial PROFINET market to grow at a CAGR of 17.20% during the period 2017-2021.
Modbus TCP/IP, the extension of the popular Modbus protocol, replaces serial connections with TCP/IP. Zion Market Research also predicts “remarkable growth” for this protocol over the next few years.
Adding the PROFINET, certified by PI North America, and Modbus TCP protocol support to the existing options allows us to better service the industrial market place, said John Feeney, COO, Perle Systems.
To meet the needs of environments where additional extensive security and network integration functionality is required, Perle IDS Switches also support:
- TACACS+ and RADIUS authentication, authorization and accounting (AAA) security services
- SSH, SNMPv3, Telnet and HTTPS secure management sessions
- IP address and IP Port number Management Access Lists (ACL)
- Password Strength Checking
- Protection of User Access Ports through IEEE 802.1x Authentication and Port Security
- Advanced protocols to optimize the performance and intelligence of the network: LLDP, GVRP, Voice VLANs, MSTP, GMRP, IPv4 IGMP Snooping and IPv6 MLD Snooping
Perle Managed Industrial Ethernet Switches enable configuration, monitoring and management of industrial LAN’s providing advanced performance and real-time deterministic network operation. These Industrial-grade Switches are designed to stand up to extreme temperatures, surges, vibration, and shock found in industrial automation, government, military, oil and gas, mining and outdoor applications. They are rugged fan-less switches that are hardened to provide superior reliability in operating temperatures from -40 to 75°C.
Perle only uses high-end components from the leading chip manufacturers to ensure the highest level of durability and reliability. In addition, all units have a corrosion resistant aluminium case and dual redundant power input with reverse polarity and overload protection.
Since entering the Industrial Switch Market, Perle has sold to numerous high-profile customers such as NBCUniversal, SolarCity, Dupont, Rolls Royce, Deutsch Windtechnik, Rockefeller Center and Siemens.

You know the feeling when you find yourself in a remote area of the country and the internet access is…umm… ”slow”, is the nice word. You can access your email and perhaps see what is going on in the world of social media but, streaming a video, having a video conference or downloading large files is not going to reliably happen. Well, if this problem can be solved at a
“Laptops do weird things at -60°F”
If I ever find myself in the remote Alaskan interior, I would like to meet Mike Spooner, Telecom and Infrastructure Technician at the Sumitomo Pogo Mine. Why? This man is a story teller. A good story teller. So good, that he can make a story about setting up a networked virtual serial port extremely entertaining. Okay, I sense your doubt, and I don’t blame you. There can’t possibly be anything more
