Swine flu is infection of the respiratory system caused by influenza viruses. These viruses also infect the respiratory system of pigs causing barking cough, decrease in appetite, nasal secretions, and listless behavior. Influenza viruses can also be transmitted to humans. Symptoms of swine flu infection in humans are similar to influenza infection; these include cough, nasal secretions, headache, fatigue, and fever (temp. 100 °F or higher). The gestation period of the disease is around one to four days. Swine flu can be transmitted from the day before the signs develop and can also transmit within five to seven days after signs develop. Some patients might be able to transmit for an extended time span. The disease lasts for about three to seven days, while severe infections could last for nearly nine to ten days. Vaccination is the best way to prevent the disease.
