Bizerba subsidiary PESA presents an innovative DWS system at PostExpo in Hanover

Automatic volume measurement optimises intralogistic processes

Balingen/Hanover, 24. September 2009 - Production, warehouse and packaging logistics – driven by globalisation, companies are facing new and always dynamic challenges. The PostExpo in Hanover is considered as a global trend indicator: On the worldwide greatest trade fair for the postal industries, Pesa the subsidiary of the technology producer Bizerba from Balingen presents from 29 September until 1 October 2009 among other things an innovative DWS system (hall 2, booth 4051).

In logistics it is increasingly more important to charge shipment prices not only according to weight, but also according to volume/weight, for example for the carrying costs calculation, for an optimum volume capacity utilisation of transport vehicles, or the subsequent fast identification of a suitable parking space during storage. The corresponding processes – dimensioning, weighing and scanning (DWS) – are combined by PESA in an innovative system. This system consists of the continuous scales CWL-B4.1 a volume measurement system and an automatic scanner. In addition, the system is linked with the Bizerba GLM-L case labeller as well as the industrial PC NT.

The product is identified on the conveying route with the help of a barcode. Due to the flexible design of the scanners, it is possible to scan several sides. This is necessary if the barcode is placed not always on the same side.The product is weighed on the continuous scales during dynamic operation, which also involves application of PESA’s ED-60 mass transducer. It applies a particular vibrating wire technology: A wire is caused by an exciting current to vibrate in a magnetic field. During the weighing process, the force of the item changes the wire’s tension and changes its frequency.

With the application of an additional wire, it is possible to compare the masses. For this purpose, the wires are tensioned with the weight of the mass to be measured, and with a prescribed comparative mass. If the frequency signals are now evaluated by calculating the ratio, accelerating forces remain out of consideration, because they equally affect both masses. “The decisive advantage is that the sensors may be used worldwide without having to be readjusted, independently from the variable gravitational force in the pole and equator areas. In addition, the force to be measured is directly converted into a frequency signal, and therefore dispenses with analogue-to-digital conversion. As a result, the system is fail-safe and fast,” explains Reto Gianotti, Managing Director Sales and Marketing for PESA.

A volume measuring system (VMS) of the company SICK http://www.sick.de determines the height, width and length of the packaging also during dynamic operation, allowing for speeds of up to 3 metres per second. With the help of these values, the corresponding volume is determined. The data collected can be transferred to a superior host system. At the PostExpo trade fair, a software application will be used that has been specifically developed for the Bizerba industrial PC NT and shows the possibilities of data preparation and transfer. On the one hand, the data collected are stored in a database, and on the other hand they are transferred to the GLM-L case labeller, which finally attaches a label with the respective volume and weight data.

Labelling also includes an integrated RFID solution. The transponder may store data on the product or delivery. The reader, for example an RFID gate, may read the stored data using radio waves. This results in decisive advantages for the goods receipt and goods issue processes: “Application of this technology optimises the flow of goods. Loading and unloading processes are substantially expedited with simultaneous quantity check. Since no visual contact between reader and label is required, this increases the reliability of identification even in case of dirty or wet labels,” says Gianotti.
