The local Chico Chamber of Commerce is strong, with over 1100 business members currently networking products and services locally, and a management staff that is quite professional, as well as creative in getting businesses together. Although their goal is to support all area businesses, there are many advantages to joining a local Chamber including: many networking opportunities that can assist any business with the right representative on the floor, increased confidence in products of services, and overall increased local recognition through Chamber member listings, websites, and affordable advertising opportunities.
The first chambers of commerce were founded around 1600 in Marseille, France and Brugge, Belgium. The oldest Chamber in the English speaking world with continuous records is said to be the Glasgow Chamber of Commerce in Scotland, founded in 1783. Currently the largest Chamber of Commerce is the Paris Chamber of Commerce and Industry with over 300,000 members.
Chambers do not operate in the same manner as the Better Business Bureau in that, while the BBB has the authority to bind its members under a formal operations doctrine (and, thus, can remove them if complaints arise regarding their services), the local chamber membership is strictly voluntary for a fee. In addition, Chambers represent the interests of all businesses, while the BBB represents the interests of the general public.
Basically every city and town in America has a Chamber of Commerce these days, so the success of networking locally is evident.
