Time of boring holograms is over. People got used to advanced design. We cannot expect them to look for visual effects like those

Delicate colour scale, subtle visual effect and picture quality higher than usual printing. Optaglio, the global leader in high-resolution security holograms, demonstrated new features of its products to experts and journalists, passing another milestone to gamification of anti-counterfeit protection. These innovations are based on an enormous resolution of light diffraction structures.

„Time of boring holograms is over. Users have right to require that protection elements are interesting, funny and including unique effects. It is what companies should focus on now. The best technology vendors in the global market have reached sufficient technological advantage over falsifiers for some time. The personality of inspecting guard is the now the key element. The inspection should be easy and amusing for him or her,“ says Tomas Karensky, senior research manager in Optaglio. „People got used to advanced design. We cannot expect them to look for visual effects like those of geekosphere of 70th.“

Optaglio applies the concept of gamification that already has worked in application development. User experience should be close to the one users know from gaming.

Optaglio has developed several new visual effects during the past year, including unique 3D objects and small animation. Most of these innovations are based on a huge resolution of diffraction structures, which also enables finer colour scale. On the other hand, slower production and higher costs are disadvantages of extreme resolution holograms. Optaglio, therefore, develops computer simulation tools and organise special training for designers to mitigate this weakness.

Behaviour studies show that if users focus on a single striking and exciting feature of protection element, he/she is usually able to spot even minor differences.

The latest innovation is a result of the cooperation of Optaglio Laboratories, Optaglio Consulting Practice and an independent behaviour research centre. The consulting unit is settled in the United Kingdom and the Czech Republic. Optalio Labs is situated in Lochovice, Czech Republic, where all research activities of Optaglio were concentrated in 2015.

Since its establishment in 1994, Optaglio has been a research organisation foremost. The culture and values of the company are framed by its founders from Czech Academy of Science. “Experiments, new technologies and material research have always been key priorities for us, for business reasons but also because we simply like it. Now we understand that we need to cover also human behaviour in our research activities,“ adds Tomas Karensky.

Optaglio is a research organisation and the global leader in high-resolution e-beam lithography security holograms. During almost 25 years of our history, we have delivered billions of holograms to governments, card manufacturers, security printing companies, premium brand producers and other organizations in more than 50 countries around the world.

In 2015, a large scientific centre and production facilities were opened in Lochovice, Czech Republic. The company currently employs almost 100 people in the United Kingdom and the Czech Republic.

Optaglio, certified to relevant international standards, operates under strict 24/7 security supervision. Our comprehensive security system covers people, processes, data and facilities. The company is a member of International Hologram Association (IHMA) through which it registers all its security devices and holograms in the central security register, in London.
