Ensemble Chelycus - Andreas Oswald (1634-1665): Sonatas

The organum | Classics CD recording "Andreas Oswald: Sonatas" is the debut album of an exciting early music ensemble named Chelycus. It is at the same time the fi rst recording of music by the otherwise practically unknown Andreas Oswald (1634-1665), Johann Sebastian Bach’s predecessor as court organist in Weimar.

This record is special not only for its status as a fi rst recording of unknown repertoire. It is the lively, pulsating performance of the ensemble’s fi rst-class soloists and specialists for 17th century music that distinguishes this release.

These recently discovered sonatas by Oswald were recorded in the chapel of Gottorf Palace (Schleswig, Germany), which has a number of architectural and acoustical parallels to the original place of performance, the 'Himmelsburg' (Heaven's Castle) of the ducal palace in Weimar, which was destroyed by fire in the late 18th century. The Gottorf chapel is also home to an exquisite organ, which was incorporated into the music making.

Organum (Latin From Greek organon, tool, instrument), the earliest way of performing liturgical chants based on consonance and improvisation. The organum represents the beginning of the harmonic music of the occident. The word organum is a synonym for both singing and the organ. This term conveys many meanings: of technical, musical and philosophical matter. Regarding these different contexts organum, for us, stands for universal musical communication.

Organum Musikproduktion has been making records since 1994. Producing over 100 titles of organ, church and chamber music the acknowledgement of both the audience and our artists is an obligation for us to continue our way of choosing and cultivating the repertoire and the quality of our products. In 2005 the experience we have gained over the years made it possible for us to redefine our art and business concepts.

Vocal music, music for keyboards and chamber-ensembles will predominantly form the repertoire comprising works from the early 16th century to the present day. The different genres will be represented by four product lines: organum/classics, organum/Delta, organum/Turnaround and organum/encore.

From our point of view the recording of sound is a form of musical performance in its own right. In addition to a work-orientated performance on high aesthetic levels an artistically motivated production makes it possible to carry out interpretational concepts that can’t always be realised on stage.

To meet the highest musical, technical and sonic requirements is not the goal, it is the prerequisite. In our opinion audiophile requirements should manifest themselves in the choice of appropriate production processes and high-quality devices that suit the respective works, not in carrying out a technical pseudo-philosophy or even a current fashion.

Working together with the artist is the main task – creating musical events in a general sense. This also sets the standard for the accompanying essays, the artwork and the packaging of organum productions.
