Pear Stairs manager in marathon stair-climbing effort

Stairs are more than just a means of getting from one floor to another – they can be a great fitness aid too, as our company buyer has discovered!

Stairs can be really good for your health. Recent studies prove that climbing eight flights a day can hugely increase your fitness levels and slash your risk of untimely death by as much as a third. In fact, this form of exercise has become so popular that charity stair-climbing races have become regular fixtures in many British skyscrapers.

Because running upstairs requires far more energy than jogging, it’s a fantastic way of losing weight – and obviously the heavier you are to begin with, the more calories you will be able to burn off. It’ll help lower your blood pressure too. Your heart rate, bone density, muscle tone and overall strength will all improve – as will your general sense of wellbeing, thanks to the stress-relieving endorphins released by all this exercise.

As our offices here are situated up a flight of stairs, one of our team members is taking the opportunity to put in some extra training in preparation for this year’s London Marathon. Purchase manager Andy Griffiths will be running in a bid to raise funds for the acclaimed Robert Jones & Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital in Oswestry, near the Welsh border.

This is Andy’s first marathon, and he’s thrown himself into a strict training regime with the zeal of the newly converted. Nobly resisting the lure of the local pub, in January alone he racked up 101 miles running round the streets, and swam over five miles. His greatest feat so far is a whopping 72-mile bike ride - almost, as he admitted later, the straw that broke the camel's back!

Andy said: “I've never run a marathon before so to add to this challenge, I'm aiming to run it in under four hours. This is going to be a huge effort from me, not only on race day but from now and the months leading up to the big day! All donations will go towards the hospital and to help fund research and new treatments, providing state of the art facilities as well as extra comfort for all patients.”
