Clare Harper of Pear Stairs with her tribute to artist MC Escher's impossible staircase

Staff at builders’ merchants Boys & Boden are celebrating after one of its employees was shortlisted for a national award. Artist Clare Harper was one of only four contenders to make the final of the Print, Design and Marketing Awards 2017.

Based in Mid Wales, Boys & Boden runs multiple DIY and plumbing branches in England and Wales. It also owns staircase company Pear Stairs, for which Clare produced her designs.

Clare was nominated for her transformation of Pear Stairs’ delivery vehicles. When the company acquired its own fleet, Clare was asked to produce a livery. She came up with a range of surreal designs giving a massive pear-shaped twist to a host of iconic paintings including MC Escher’s Relativity with its never-ending staircase, Damien Hirst’s A Pear Divided and Salvador Dali’s famous melting clocks – or rather, pears.

The designs were transferred on to vinyl lorry curtains by specialist firm Structure-flex Ltd, which was also shortlisted for the award. Although in the end Clare was just pipped to the post by another contestant, her inspired works of art were highly commended by the judges.

Clare said: “There are not that many times in an artist’s career where the client says, ‘Do anything you want as long as it’s amazing.’ So when I heard those magic words I ran with them. It’s a privilege and a joy to work for someone who shows such faith in my abilities.”
