ASTM International Publishes Revised Fire Safety Standard for Candles
ASTM International has published a new version of its fire safety standard for candles – ASTM F2417. Published in October 2017, the new standard makes a number of revisions, including:• Clearer definitions of religious/ceremonial candles based on size. In general, these candles are 17 inches or more and other candles for worship, that are used at home, are now regarded as “extended use candles”
• Candle Burning Performance Test has been altered to account for burning of extended use candles, which are now specified to burn for the prescribed length of time, instead of 8 hours for gel-containing candles and 4 hours for other types of candles
• Plastic container flammability tests are changed. The 2016 version required both total burn time not to exceed 300 seconds for 10 samples and individual burn time not to exceed 30 seconds. The 2017 version adds requirement which states “no single plastic container shall be completely consumed during testing”
The last change removes the gap in the 2016 version of the standard that did not cover extremely flammable plastic containers that totally burnt up in less than 30 seconds.
ASTM F2417 sets out the minimum safety requirements for candles with the intention of reducing fires, deaths, and injuries when burning a candle.
