Major new assignment for BASF IT Services in Asia
Since the beginning of this year BASF IT Services has been standardizing the server landscape for a total of 49 national BASF Group subsidiaries throughout Asia and the Pacific region. In the future the IT service provider will operate BASF applications for this region on a small number of high-performance servers. The majority of these servers will be located in the two BASF IT Services data centers in Ludwigshafen. The applications were previously run on a large number of smaller servers supported by other service providers in the respective individual countries.
A total of approximately 12,000 users will profit from the consolidation, in 16 countries from China to New Zealand and from Pakistan to Japan. As a result, the worldwide server capacities existing within the BASF Group can be better exploited, leading not only to reduced energy consumption, but also to lower operating costs.
"The objective of the consolidation project is to establish an innovative centrally operated infrastructure. This decision is another important step towards standardizing the global IT landscape of the BASF Group," explains Andrew Pike, head of Information Services BASF Group.
The consolidation will mean varied improvements for the users particularly in the area of e-mail systems. For example, in the future all BASF employees in the Asia Pacific region will use uniform e-mail services in the current version of Lotus Notes. They will also be able to use any PC with an Internet connection to read their company e-mail and will be able to communicate with colleagues and customers via chat and Web conferences using the latest version of the Lotus program Sametime. The upcoming standardization of network drives will also decisively simplify the flow of information among employees.
"We're proud to make a contribution to standardizing IT processes beyond the boundaries of Europe and to realizing tangible value creation for the BASF employees in Asia," says Dr. Ralf Sonnberger, Managing Director at BASF IT Services.
BASF IT Services has been active in a number of projects in the Asia Pacific region for several years now. Since February 2002 the team at the Firewall Operation Center (FOC) has secured the complete range of Internet traffic for the BASF national subsidiaries in the region. In late 2004, on behalf of BASF South East Asia Pte. Ltd. the IT service provider took over operation of the Asian SAP ERP system, in which the region's essential business processes are represented. The SAP HR system for the BASF Asia Pacific region has also been operated in Ludwigshafen since 2005.
