Keeping Kids Safe Around Your Pool

Summer is here, school is out and swimming pools are opening across the country. To help you beat the heat and still promote safety, the health experts at Envolve, an integrated healthcare solutions company, are pleased to share a few tips to reduce hazards for pool owners with children.
1. Practice Your Strokes. Swimming is not only fun but can be a lifesaving skill that everyone can learn. Once children reach the age of four, it’s a good idea to enroll them in lessons so they feel confident in the water. Encourage them to practice to help strengthen their skills. BONUS TIP: Keep yourself and the kids protected from harmful rays – even on cloudy days – by using a water-resistant sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher. Make sure to apply 15 minutes prior to sun exposure, and always reapply every two hours or after swimming or sweating.

2. Avoid Drains. Teach your children to stay away from drains if they are loose, missing or damaged. Some safety precautions to take before entering the pool include tying up long hair and ensuring swim suits fit correctly and aren’t too loose. Remind children to be aware of their surroundings and to always tell an adult if they have concerns about the condition of the pool before entering.

3. Build Barriers. Install a proper fence so children aren’t able to wander into your pool area without supervision. It should be high enough so kids can’t climb over, and gates shouldn’t be able to be opened by kids. Other safeguards include pool alarm systems and functional pool covers.

4. Get Certified. Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, also known as CPR, is a necessary skill for all pool owners to learn in case of emergencies. Once certified, make sure to update your certification on a regular basis so you’re aware of all essential information.

5. Steady Supervision. Remember to always stay alert and avoid distractions like using your phone. It’s recommended that for every two children there’s one adult present. If you need to step away and you’re the only adult, everyone should hop out of the pool or find another adult to supervise.
