Growth of Wearable Healthcare Devices Creating Opportunities for Specialty Adhesives

Press release from: Applied Market Data

(Nashua, NH) – The miniaturization of electronics continues to drive innovation, enhanced patient care and improved outcomes throughout the healthcare industry. At the forefront of these advances are devices owing their feature functionality to the performance of a new generation of sensing elements and improved signal processing. This technology has spawned a new generation of products – wearable healthcare devices designed to be worn directly on the skin using pressure sensitive adhesives – that can monitor ambulatory patients, deliver injectable drugs or simply improve personal fitness programs. This is disruptive technology that will challenge the way doctors relate to patients, drugs are developed, diseases are monitored and bodies are molded.

Wearable monitoring devices can include many combinations of biometric and physiological sensors depending upon the data that they are designed to collect. These data can include distance walked, calories burned, heart rate, temperature, blood oxygen level, sleep quality, location, perspiration, pressure and other data. The specifics of what is being measured drive the selection of components, signal conditioning components and connectivity chips that are used in a wearable device.

Drug delivery devices designed to be worn on the torso represent one of the fastest moving healthcare device markets. This class of devices consists of so-called patch pumps, traditional reservoir-based insulin delivery systems, and large volume subcutaneous infusion systems - capable of delivering drug quantities above 10 mL -that fill a previously unmet need for devices capable of administering drug volumes that are considered too high for traditional subcutaneous injection (> 2 mL) and at the low end of infusion volumes.

While much of the media coverage recently has focused on durable devices that are designed to be worn on the wrist or arm, low-cost disposable devices designed to adhere directly to the skin will eclipse health watches and related products on a unit basis in the long-term, as new applications continue to be productized. By embedding electronics into small form factor, flexible designs, wearable healthcare devices address several related unmet needs, including patient mobility and compliance, managed care economics, and reliability. For suppliers of medical device adhesives, these developments represent significant business opportunities.

These findings are contained in a comprehensive report researched and written by Applied Market Data. Adhesive Markets for Wearable Healthcare Devices: Products, Technologies, Markets and Opportunities consists of comprehensive analysis of the current market for wearable healthcare devices, forecasts of future activity, and in-depth assessments of products and applications.
