DAVIES TURNER HELPS TEHRAN BOOK FAIR COME OF AGE

07-28-2008 02:20 PM CET | Logistics & Transport

Press release from: Davies Turner

Every year for the last 21 years that the Tehran International Book Fair has been held, Davies Turner has handled the delivery of books and publications to the event on behalf of many British and international publishing companies.

This year, the UK and Ireland’s leading independent freight services provider, had reasons of its own to celebrate the 21 years’ association – it carried its best-ever total by road to the Book Fair. Fifteen trailers of books, weighing almost 300 tonnes, plus several more tonnes of airfreight, were moved to support exhibitors at the event.

Comments Philip Stephenson, Joint Managing Director of Davies Turner: “We would like to congratulate the Tehran International Book Fair on reaching this milestone. We, too, have reached a significant landmark this year in moving 291 tonnes of material by road in addition to our airfreight shipments, our best-ever total on this route. It is a record amount of textbooks - but then the major buyers are Iranian universities.

“Large quantities of books destined for this Fair were also carried on our weekly import container services from North America to our secure regional distribution centre at Dartford near London where they were transhipped directly onto our regular overland trailer departures for Iran. This minimises handling and reduces the potential for damage. We have run this service for a number of years and it has proven very popular with our publishing clients.”

Books collected from mainland Europe are in turn consolidated with items from UK publishers before being taken to Tehran. Publishers elsewhere in the world that participate in the Fair are not neglected, says Mr Stephenson.

He says: “We also offer direct seafreight services from the Far East to Bandar Abbas for Asian publishers that are attending the Fair. These shipments are consolidated at the Iranian port on arrival and transported directly from there to the fairground in Tehran. Most of the books we transport are purchased at the Fair but we do operate a return service for any remaindered stock under our agreement with the Book Fair organisers.

“Our edge in Iran is that we are committed to the market and have had a presence for 43 years, 40 of them with our own registered office where our experienced local manager, Mr Daman Singh, provides invaluable customer support assisted by our local partner, Rahbanan Co Ltd.”

These record-breaking transport volumes have coincided with the introduction by Davies Turner of the Red Prairie Warehouse Management System (WMS) at Dartford and other main hubs, following a strategic decision to further improve the company’s services for its publishing clients.

Mr Stephenson says: “We have made a major investment in the Red Prairie WMS to improve our services for publishers and the book trade. To demonstrate our commitment to the market, along with this improved software package, we have made considerable investments in quality racking and shelving at a number of our regional distribution centres across the UK.”

US-based RedPrairie is a world-leading systems optimisation company. Built on an advanced Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) developed over the past 15 years, the RedPrairie integrated E2e™ solutions offer on-demand capabilities to many of the world’s leading logistics companies and supply chain management specialists.

Concludes Mr Stephenson: “We are the leading British operator of trailer and multimodal services to this market with weekly departures for groupage, part and full loads. Typical transit times are between 12-14 days in summer and 16-18 days in winter. We also offer an On Time Express option with an assured 12-day transit.”

In addition to export and import trailer services, Davies Turner also offers comprehensive seafreight and air cargo services between the UK and Iran.
