Last-Mile Delivery Market Draws US$10 Billion-Plus DHL-USPS Agreement | Report by DataM Intelligence
DHL eCommerce and the U.S. Postal Service signed an exclusive, multiyear agreement valued at more than US$10 billion for last-mile parcel delivery in the United States. DHL will handle pickup, automated hub sorting and linehaul, with USPS completing delivery across its network of more than 41,550 ZIP Codes and 170 million delivery points. The agreement gives DHL expanded U.S. reach and signals the value of combining private logistics infrastructure with an established postal network to meet e-commerce demand. The partnership creates a large-scale opportunity for parcel carriers, retailers and logistics technology providers to develop flexible delivery models, improve network utilization and serve online merchants nationwide. DHL and USPS gain a multiyear operating framework, while competitors such as UPS, FedEx, Amazon Logistics and regional carriers face added pressure to strengthen coverage, speed and cost efficiency. Route optimization, automated sorting, electric fleets and parcel-locker networks offer avenues for service expansion and differentiation.

Japan: Parcel choice becomes measurable
Japan's transport ministry reported that use of flexible parcel-receipt options-such as lockers and unattended drop-off-reached 31% in April 2026, while redelivery fell to 7.6%. The government's 2030 goal is about 50% adoption. Carriers and retailers therefore have a target: capture delivery preferences before dispatch and reduce failed first attempts. Amazon also began using unused space on three Shinkansen routes for parcels, connecting Tokyo with northern and central Japan and shifting part of long-haul movement from road to rail.
United States: Networks become products
North America represents about 35% of market revenue in DataM's estimate. datamintelligence.com In the U.S., Amazon is selling its logistics stack as a service while USPS's agreement with DHL makes postal delivery capacity part of a private carrier's offer. About.usps.com The shift is from owning every mile to combining owned networks, postal access and store-based or drone fulfillment to meet different delivery windows.
Company Profiles
Amazon: Beyond its retail platform, ASCS now sells freight, distribution, fulfillment and parcel shipping to other businesses. Its Prime-on-merchant-sites offer extends Amazon's checkout delivery proposition into outside sales channels.
UPS: UPS reported US$88.7 billion in 2025 revenue and handled an average 20.8 million packages each business day. Its U.S. Domestic, International and Supply Chain Solutions segments combine parcel reach with forwarding and distribution.
FedEx: FedEx reported US$94.7 billion in FY2026 revenue, up from US$87.9 billion in FY2025. Its June 2026 results highlighted higher U.S. and international package yields, network transformation and the completed FedEx Freight spin-off.
DHL Group: DHL eCommerce generated €6.884 billion in 2025 revenue and €379 million in EBIT. The USPS contract adds U.S. postal reach to DHL's pickup, automated sorting and line-haul operations. Q4 2025
