Cocoa Prices Today: What Happened This Week?

Cocoa futures fell sharply in the week ending 22 September 2026. According to the Epignosis Insights cocoa price tracker, the ICE New York December cocoa contract settled at around USD 5,406 per tonne, down 8.8% week-on-week. The ICE London December contract closed near GBP 3,999 per tonne, down 7.3%. A single 7.7% fall on Friday, 18 September, pushed the ICE cocoa price to a seven-week low.

Why Did Cocoa Futures Fall?

The Epignosis Insights cocoa market analysis points to abundant near-term supply. Côte d'Ivoire's cocoa port arrivals reached approximately 2.14 million tonnes for the marketing year through mid-September, up around 18% year-on-year. At the same time, ICE-certified cocoa stocks held near a two-year high of about 3.44 million bags. Together, these factors outweighed concerns about weather and pushed cocoa futures lower.

Cocoa Price Forecast 2026: What Comes Next?

Looking ahead, the cocoa price forecast in the tracker sets a base case of USD 5,100 to USD 5,900 per tonne for ICE New York December cocoa through the end of October 2026. The bear case ranges from USD 4,600 to USD 5,100, while the bull case extends from USD 5,900 to USD 6,800 if dry weather and weak arrivals confirm a tighter supply picture.

West Africa Cocoa Supply Outlook for 2026/27

The West Africa cocoa supply outlook is far tighter than current stocks suggest. Leading forecasters now expect the 2026/27 global cocoa surplus to shrink to between 25,000 and 80,000 tonnes, from more than 400,000 tonnes this season. Ghana's cocoa crop is projected to fall by about 13% to 650,000 tonnes, and early new-season deliveries in Côte d'Ivoire are well behind last year. A developing El Niño and a possible harsh harmattan season from November remain the biggest upside risks for cocoa prices.

Cocoa Demand: Europe Weak, Asia Strong

Global cocoa demand remains uneven. Q2 2026 grindings fell 4.6% in Europe, rose 25% in Asia and increased about 7.7% in North America. Chocolate makers are growing revenue mainly through price increases rather than higher volumes, which continues to limit cocoa bean demand in mature markets.

Cocoa Farmgate Prices and Smuggling Risk

The tracker also covers cocoa farmgate prices in West Africa. Côte d'Ivoire has kept its 2026/27 main-crop price at 1,200 CFA francs per kilogram, while Ghana has proposed a roughly 6% increase. Epignosis Insights estimates the gap at around USD 1.6 per kilogram, which could encourage cross-border smuggling and affect official supply data.
