Orisha University offers online Certificate, Bachelor's, Master's and PhD programs in Ifá and Orisha Studies for $99/month. Study

September 8, 2026 - Osain is the ninth of the 16 principal Orishas studied in the Bachelor of Sacred Sciences at Orisha University (OrishaUniversity.com) - the Orisha of the forest, the owner of every plant, leaf, and root, and the source of the herbal medicine on which Ifá ritual and healing depend. This release is part 9 of a sixteen-part series by Orisha University founder Ajarn Shaman Shu (Robert S. Shumake, PhD) that introduces each of the principal Orishas, along with their attributes, sacred symbols, and living lessons.
In Yoruba spiritual philosophy, the Orishas are the divine forces through which Olodumare, the Supreme Being, shapes creation, nature, consciousness, and community. They are not distant abstractions. Each Orisha represents a living spiritual principle and a pathway of character, responsibility, and transformation that a human being can study, honor, and grow into.
A note on variation: colors, numbers, offerings, and stories differ across Yoruba, Lucumí, Santería, Candomblé, and diaspora lineages. What follows reflects widely shared associations rather than the rulings of any single house. Serious students should study under qualified elders in a living community.
Who Osain Is
Osain, also called Osanyin, is the Orisha of the forest and the owner of all vegetation. He knows the healing and spiritual properties of every leaf, and the traditional pharmacology of the Yoruba world is his domain. No Orisha can be consecrated, no ebo completed, and no healing performed without the plants that belong to him.
Osain is often depicted as one-eyed, one-legged, and one-armed - a being who lives entirely within nature and belongs to no village. He is secretive, solitary, and profoundly wise, and his stories teach that the earth itself holds the pharmacy of the body and the soul. Ajarn Shaman Shu's work on African plant medicine draws directly from Osain's tradition.
Titles: Osanyin, Elewe (Owner of Leaves), Baba Ewe (Father of Herbs), Agbenigi (He Who Lives in the Tree)
Role: Master of herbs and healing; keeper of the forest; source of the sacred leaves used in every Orisha ritual
Relationship to Orunmila: In narratives Osain was once Orunmila's servant, and Ifá and herbal medicine remain inseparable
Relationship to Shango and Oya: A famous story tells how Oya's wind scattered Osain's herbs among the Orishas, giving each their sacred plants
Sacred Associations
Domain: Herbs, plants, healing, medicine, the forest, ecological knowledge, the hidden power of nature
Colors: Green and earth tones (green, red, and yellow in some houses)
Sacred objects: The gourd (calabash), the mortar and pestle, the forest, the staff with the bird on top, medicinal leaves
Number: 7 and 21
Devotees: Herbalists, healers, physicians, and everyone who prepares sacred leaves honor Osain
Diaspora names: Osain (Lucumi/Santeria), Ossaim or Ossanha (Candomble)
Nature Is the First Physician
Before the hospital there was the forest. Osain's tradition holds that every illness has its answer in a leaf, and that the healer's task is to learn the language of the plants. The Yoruba word for medicine, ewe, also means leaf. This is not metaphor; it is a complete system of botanical, pharmacological, and spiritual knowledge developed over centuries and carried across the Atlantic in the memories of enslaved healers.
Orisha University's Orisha Herbology course studies Osain as the foundation of African sacred medicine, and the university's founder has written on the African origins of the modern plant-medicine and psychedelic-healing movements. Osain reminds every student that healing grows from the ground beneath our feet.
Core Lesson
Nature is the first physician. Osain teaches respect for the living earth and the knowledge that healing - physical and spiritual - grows from the ground. His way is secretive, solitary, and deeply wise, and he asks every student to learn the names of the leaves before claiming to heal.
"Every leaf Osain owns is a lesson in humility. Western medicine is rediscovering what the forest always knew, and our students learn to honor the original source before they borrow from it."
- Robert S. Shumake, PhD (Ajarn Shaman Shu), Founder and Chancellor, Orisha University
(Quote drafted for founder approval.)
Education Before Claims of Authority
Orisha University is explicit that a degree documents completion of an educational curriculum and does not confer priestly initiation. Titles such as Babalawo or Iyanifa involve distinct lineage, training, community, and initiatory requirements. Online learning is presented as a foundation that complements, rather than replaces, living communities, elders, and appropriate initiation.
Study From Anywhere
Structured Ifá education has historically been difficult to find outside a handful of communities. Orisha University's online format allows students in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, Phoenix, Philadelphia, San Antonio, San Diego, Dallas, and Jacksonville - and anywhere else in the world - to access lessons from home, review material more than once, complete assessments, track academic progress, and connect their studies to a broader spiritual community without relocating to Nigeria, the Caribbean, or another city.

Frequently Asked Questions: Osain, Ifá, and Orisha University
These questions follow the categories used in the Orisha University study guides. Answers reflect widely shared teachings; names, narratives, and ritual practices vary among lineages, and specific ritual instruction belongs to qualified elders.
Foundations and Identity
1. Who is Osain?
Osain is the Orisha of the forest, the owner of all plants, and the master of herbal healing.
2. What does the name Osain mean?
Osain is a contraction of Osanyin; his titles Elewe and Baba Ewe mean "owner of leaves" and "father of herbs."
3. What alternative names are used for Osain?
Osanyin, Ossaim, Ossanha, and Elewe, depending on the tradition.
4. Why is Osain depicted with one eye, one leg, and one arm?
Narratives explain his form differently, but all agree that he is a being of pure nature who belongs to the forest rather than the village.
Cosmology and Spiritual Meaning
5. Why do the Orishas depend on Osain?
Because every Orisha's sacred leaves come from Osain, and no consecration or healing is possible without them.
6. What does the forest symbolize in Osain's worship?
The living intelligence of nature - untamed, generous, and full of hidden knowledge.
7. What is the story of Oya scattering Osain's herbs?
Osain once kept all plants for himself; Oya's wind scattered them among the Orishas, giving each their sacred leaves and making healing available to all.
Destiny, Ori, and Human Purpose
8. What does Osain teach about destiny?
The body and spirit must be healthy to fulfill destiny, and health comes from harmony with the earth.
9. What role does patience play in Osain's teaching?
Plants grow slowly; the healer learns slowly; Osain has no shortcuts.
Character and Ethical Conduct
10. What does Osain teach about secrecy and knowledge?
Some knowledge is protected for good reason; the student earns access through discipline and respect.
11. What does Osain teach about respecting nature?
Taking from the forest without gratitude or restraint is theft from the Orisha himself.
12. What warnings does Osain offer about false healers?
Those who claim to heal without knowing the leaves endanger others and offend Osain.
Blessings, Challenges, and Balance
13. Which blessings are associated with Osain?
Physical healing, protection from illness, knowledge of medicine, and harmony with the natural world.
14. Which cautions accompany Osain's blessings?
Plants that heal can also harm; knowledge misused turns medicine into poison.
Divination, Guidance, and Ritual Boundaries
15. What might it mean when Osain is indicated in a consultation?
Interpretations vary, but Osain often signals health, medicine, the need for cleansing, or a call to learn the herbs. A qualified diviner must interpret a specific cast.
16. What is ewe in Ifá practice?
Ewe means both "leaf" and "medicine"; the sacred leaves are prepared for cleansing, healing, and consecration under Osain's authority.
17. Why must herbal and ritual detail be left to qualified practitioners?
Improper use of plants can cause harm, and the preparation of sacred leaves is governed by initiatory knowledge.
Society and Contemporary Application
18. What can Osain teach about health today?
That healing begins with the earth, the diet, and the body's relationship with nature.
19. How does Osain relate to the modern plant-medicine movement?
Ajarn Shaman Shu's book The African Origins of Psychedelics and Its Healing Powers argues that today's plant-medicine movement has ancestral roots in African traditions like Osain's.
20. How can Osain's teachings inform ecological responsibility?
If the forest is a living Orisha, then deforestation and pollution are spiritual offenses as well as environmental ones.
