Orisha University offers online Certificate, Bachelor's, Master's and PhD programs in Ifá and Orisha Studies for $99/month. Study

September 8, 2026 - Oya is the seventh of the 16 principal Orishas studied in the Bachelor of Sacred Sciences at Orisha University (OrishaUniversity.com) - the Orisha of winds, storms, lightning, sudden change, and the gateway between life and death, and the warrior-queen who rides beside Shango into battle. This release is part 7 of a sixteen-part series by Orisha University founder Ajarn Shaman Shu (Robert S. Shumake, PhD) that introduces each of the principal Orishas, along with their attributes, sacred symbols, and living lessons.
In Yoruba spiritual philosophy, the Orishas are the divine forces through which Olodumare, the Supreme Being, shapes creation, nature, consciousness, and community. They are not distant abstractions. Each Orisha represents a living spiritual principle and a pathway of character, responsibility, and transformation that a human being can study, honor, and grow into.
A note on variation: colors, numbers, offerings, and stories differ across Yoruba, Lucumí, Santería, Candomblé, and diaspora lineages. What follows reflects widely shared associations rather than the rulings of any single house. Serious students should study under qualified elders in a living community.
Who Oya Is
Oya is the wind - from the gentle breeze to the tornado that tears the roof from the house. She is the Orisha of sudden change, of the marketplace where fortunes shift, and of the cemetery gates through which every soul must pass. She guards the threshold between the living and the dead and escorts the ancestors home.
Oya is a warrior. In the narratives she fights beside Shango, and in some she is the source of his power over fire. She is fierce, independent, and unpredictable, and fiercely loyal to those she loves. Her power is transformation itself: the wind that clears away what is dead so that new life can grow.
Titles: Yansan (Mother of Nine), Iyansan, Oya Iyansan, Ayaba Nikua (Queen of Death), Oya Ajere (Carrier of Fire)
Role: Orisha of wind and storms; guardian of the cemetery gates and the ancestors; warrior; ruler of the marketplace
Relationship to Shango: His wife and battle companion; in some stories the one who taught him to breathe fire
Relationship to the Egungun: Oya is intimately connected with the Egungun, the masked ancestral spirits
Sacred Associations
Domain: Wind, storms, tornadoes, lightning, sudden change, the marketplace, the ancestors, the threshold of death
Colors: Purple, burgundy, maroon, and multicolor (nine colors in some houses)
Sacred objects: The iruke (horsetail whisk), copper, the machete, the buffalo, the mask, nine-colored cloth
Number: 9
Sacred site: The Niger River, called Odo Oya in Yoruba
Diaspora names: Yansa or Oya-Yansan (Lucumi/Santeria), Iansa (Candomble)
Change Is Sacred
Oya is the Orisha most people fear and most people need. She governs the changes no one chooses - the death, the loss, the upheaval - and she teaches that these are not punishments but passages. Her wind strips away the dead leaves; her storm floods the stagnant pond; her hand at the cemetery gate ensures that no one crosses alone.
Orisha University studies Oya as the principle of transformation and of feminine power in its most elemental form. Students learn that endings are not failures, that the ancestors remain present, and that the courage to change is itself a form of devotion.
Core Lesson
Change is sacred. Oya teaches that endings are not failures, that transformation requires courage, and that a woman's power can be as elemental as a storm. Her way is fierce, independent, and unpredictable, and she asks every student to let go of what is dead so that life can return.
"Oya stands at every gate you are afraid to walk through. Grief, change, loss, rebirth - she owns all of it. We teach her so that students stop running from transformation and start honoring it."
- Robert S. Shumake, PhD (Ajarn Shaman Shu), Founder and Chancellor, Orisha University
(Quote drafted for founder approval.)
Education Before Claims of Authority
Orisha University is explicit that a degree documents completion of an educational curriculum and does not confer priestly initiation. Titles such as Babalawo or Iyanifa involve distinct lineage, training, community, and initiatory requirements. Online learning is presented as a foundation that complements, rather than replaces, living communities, elders, and appropriate initiation.
Study From Anywhere
Structured Ifá education has historically been difficult to find outside a handful of communities. Orisha University's online format allows students in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, Phoenix, Philadelphia, San Antonio, San Diego, Dallas, and Jacksonville - and anywhere else in the world - to access lessons from home, review material more than once, complete assessments, track academic progress, and connect their studies to a broader spiritual community without relocating to Nigeria, the Caribbean, or another city.

These questions follow the categories used in the Orisha University study guides. Answers reflect widely shared teachings; names, narratives, and ritual practices vary among lineages, and specific ritual instruction belongs to qualified elders.
Foundations and Identity
1. Who is Oya?
Oya is the Orisha of winds, storms, sudden change, the marketplace, and the gateway between the living and the dead.
2. What does the name Oya mean?
Oya is associated with the Yoruba phrase for "she tore," evoking the wind that rips and transforms; the Niger River is called Odo Oya in her honor.
3. What alternative names are used for Oya?
Yansan, Iyansan, Iansa, and Oya-Yansan, depending on the tradition.
4. Which common misconceptions about Oya should be corrected?
Oya is not a goddess of death in a morbid sense; she is a guardian of transitions who protects both the dying and the grieving.
Cosmology and Spiritual Meaning
5. What is Oya's relationship to the ancestors?
She guards the cemetery gates and is intimately connected with the Egungun, the masked ancestral spirits.
6. What does the wind symbolize in Oya's worship?
Breath, spirit, change, and the unseen force that moves everything without being seen.
7. Why is nine sacred to Oya?
Her title Yansan, "mother of nine," refers in different traditions to nine children, nine tributaries of the Niger, or nine winds.
Destiny, Ori, and Human Purpose
8. What does Oya teach about destiny?
A destiny often requires leaving behind what is comfortable; Oya is the wind that pushes a person toward the next stage.
9. What role does courage play in Oya's teaching?
Courage is the willingness to face change and death without denial.
Character and Ethical Conduct
10. What does Oya teach about honesty?
The storm reveals what was hidden; Oya's justice exposes deception.
11. What does Oya teach about independence?
Oya answers to no one; she teaches that a woman's strength is her own and does not require permission.
12. What warnings does Oya offer about clinging to the past?
What refuses to change is swept away; stagnation invites the storm.
Blessings, Challenges, and Balance
13. Which blessings are associated with Oya?
Successful transitions, protection during grief, victory in conflict, prosperity in commerce, and the guidance of the ancestors.
14. Which cautions accompany Oya's blessings?
Her changes can be sudden and painful; she does not wait for readiness.
Divination, Guidance, and Ritual Boundaries
15. What might it mean when Oya is indicated in a consultation?
Interpretations vary, but Oya often signals change, loss, ancestral matters, or the need to release something. A qualified diviner must interpret a specific cast.
16. What offerings are traditionally associated with Oya?
Public sources commonly name eggplant, red wine, and plums; specific ritual instruction belongs to initiated elders.
17. Why is Oya honored in the marketplace?
The market is a place of constant change and exchange, and Oya rules it as she rules the wind.
Society and Contemporary Application
18. What can Oya teach about major life transitions?
Grieve honestly, release what is finished, and trust that the wind clears the ground for what comes next.
19. How can Oya's teachings inform business and commerce?
Markets change suddenly; those who adapt survive, and those who cling to the old fail.
20. How can Oya's teachings support readers facing loss?
She reminds them that the ancestors remain present and that death is a gate, not a wall.
