Orisha University offers online Certificate, Bachelor's, Master's and PhD programs in Ifá and Orisha Studies for $99/month. Study

September 8, 2026 - Esu is the eighth of the 16 principal Orishas studied in the Bachelor of Sacred Sciences at Orisha University (OrishaUniversity.com) - the divine messenger, the Orisha of the crossroads, communication, choice, and consequence, and the one without whom no prayer reaches heaven and no sacrifice is accepted. This release is part 8 of a sixteen-part series by Orisha University founder Ajarn Shaman Shu (Robert S. Shumake, PhD) that introduces each of the principal Orishas, along with their attributes, sacred symbols, and living lessons.
In Yoruba spiritual philosophy, the Orishas are the divine forces through which Olodumare, the Supreme Being, shapes creation, nature, consciousness, and community. They are not distant abstractions. Each Orisha represents a living spiritual principle and a pathway of character, responsibility, and transformation that a human being can study, honor, and grow into.
A note on variation: colors, numbers, offerings, and stories differ across Yoruba, Lucumí, Santería, Candomblé, and diaspora lineages. What follows reflects widely shared associations rather than the rulings of any single house. Serious students should study under qualified elders in a living community.
Who Esu Is
Esu, also called Eshu, Elegba, and Elegbara, is the divine messenger who carries every prayer, offering, and sacrifice between the human world and the Orishas. He stands at every crossroads, every doorway, and every moment of decision. He is the principle of ashe in motion - the power that makes things happen - and the enforcer of cosmic law who tests character and exposes hypocrisy.
Colonial missionaries wrongly equated Esu with the devil, a distortion that continues to damage the understanding of Yoruba religion. Esu is not evil. He is the Orisha of consequence: he opens the road for the honest and closes it for the deceiver, and he ensures that every choice returns to the one who made it. Ajarn Shaman Shu's book They Made the Devil Black confronts this history directly.
Titles: Elegbara (Owner of Power), Elegba, Onile Orita (Owner of the Crossroads), Olona (Owner of the Road), Laroye
Role: Divine messenger; keeper of the crossroads; deliverer of sacrifice; enforcer of consequence; tester of character
Relationship to Orunmila: Esu is Orunmila's closest companion; he carries the ebo that Ifá prescribes and enforces the outcome
Relationship to Ogun and Osoosi: With Ogun and Osoosi, Esu forms the group of "warriors" received early in many initiatory paths
Sacred Associations
Domain: Communication, the crossroads, choice, chance, openings and closings, the delivery of sacrifice, the testing of character
Colors: Red and black
Sacred objects: Keys, the hooked staff (ogo), cowrie shells, laterite stone, the crossroads itself, the doorway
Number: 3 (21 in some lineages)
Position in ritual: Esu is honored first in nearly every ceremony because he opens the road for everything that follows
Diaspora names: Elegua or Eleggua (Lucumi/Santeria), Exu (Candomble), Legba or Papa Legba (Haitian Vodou)
They Made the Devil Black
When European missionaries encountered Esu, they needed a Yoruba word for their devil, and they chose him - the trickster, the tester, the one who punished hypocrisy. The result was centuries of distortion in which the Orisha of consequence was recast as the Orisha of evil. Ifá tells a different story: Esu is the one who ensures that goodness is rewarded, that sacrifice is delivered, and that no one escapes the results of their own choices.
Orisha University studies Esu as the first Orisha of every ceremony and the first lesson of every serious student. Understanding Esu means understanding that spiritual life is not about avoiding consequence but about choosing wisely at the crossroads.
Core Lesson
Every choice has consequences. Esu teaches that the road you walk is the one you choose, and that honesty, respect, and correct action open doors that no force can close. His way is playful, unpredictable, and brilliant, and he is uncompromising in returning every action to its author.
"Esu is the most misunderstood Orisha in the world, and the most important to understand. Nothing moves without him. If you want to know why your prayers are not being answered, start with the crossroads and start with your own choices."
- Robert S. Shumake, PhD (Ajarn Shaman Shu), Founder and Chancellor, Orisha University
(Quote drafted for founder approval.)
Education Before Claims of Authority
Orisha University is explicit that a degree documents completion of an educational curriculum and does not confer priestly initiation. Titles such as Babalawo or Iyanifa involve distinct lineage, training, community, and initiatory requirements. Online learning is presented as a foundation that complements, rather than replaces, living communities, elders, and appropriate initiation.
Study From Anywhere
Structured Ifá education has historically been difficult to find outside a handful of communities. Orisha University's online format allows students in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, Phoenix, Philadelphia, San Antonio, San Diego, Dallas, and Jacksonville - and anywhere else in the world - to access lessons from home, review material more than once, complete assessments, track academic progress, and connect their studies to a broader spiritual community without relocating to Nigeria, the Caribbean, or another city.

Frequently Asked Questions: Esu, Ifá, and Orisha University
These questions follow the categories used in the Orisha University study guides. Answers reflect widely shared teachings; names, narratives, and ritual practices vary among lineages, and specific ritual instruction belongs to qualified elders.
Foundations and Identity
1. Who is Esu?
Esu is the divine messenger, the Orisha of the crossroads, communication, choice, and consequence, and the deliverer of every sacrifice.
2. What does the name Esu mean?
The name is associated with force and with the act of gathering or enforcing; his title Elegbara means "owner of power."
3. What alternative names are used for Esu?
Eshu, Elegba, Elegbara, Elegua, Exu, and Legba, depending on the tradition.
4. Is Esu the devil?
No. The equation of Esu with the devil is a colonial distortion. Esu is the Orisha of consequence who rewards honesty and exposes deception.
5. Which common misconceptions about Esu should be corrected?
That he is evil, that he is chaotic without purpose, or that he can be ignored. Every ceremony honors him first.
Cosmology and Spiritual Meaning
6. Why is Esu honored first in every ceremony?
Because he carries every prayer and offering; without him, nothing reaches the Orishas.
7. What does the crossroads symbolize?
The moment of choice, where every path is possible and the consequences of the chosen path begin.
8. What is Esu's relationship to ashe?
Esu is ashe in motion - the dynamic power that makes things happen in the world.
Destiny, Ori, and Human Purpose
9. What does Esu teach about destiny?
Destiny is walked one choice at a time; Esu stands at each crossroads to return every choice to its maker.
10. What role does character play in Esu's teaching?
Esu tests character. Those who are honest and respectful find open roads; those who deceive find them closed.
Character and Ethical Conduct
11. What does Esu teach about honesty?
Esu exposes the hypocrite; honesty is the only protection against his tests.
12. What does Esu teach about respect?
Esu punishes those who neglect protocol and reward; respect for the messenger is respect for the message.
13. What warnings does Esu offer about ignoring consequences?
Consequences cannot be avoided, only delayed; Esu ensures that every action eventually returns.
Blessings, Challenges, and Balance
14. Which blessings are associated with Esu?
Open roads, opportunity, successful communication, protection at doorways, and the acceptance of prayers and offerings.
15. Which cautions accompany Esu's blessings?
Esu tests before he rewards; disrespect or dishonesty can close every door at once.
Divination, Guidance, and Ritual Boundaries
16. What might it mean when Esu is indicated in a consultation?
Interpretations vary, but Esu often signals a crossroads, a message, a test, or the need to complete an obligation. A qualified diviner must interpret a specific cast.
17. What offerings are traditionally associated with Esu?
Public sources commonly name candy, toys, rum, and palm oil; specific ritual instruction belongs to initiated elders.
18. Why is Esu's shrine placed at the door or the crossroads?
Because he guards thresholds and controls what enters and leaves.
Society and Contemporary Application
19. What can Esu teach about communication today?
Say what you mean, honor your commitments, and remember that every message has a messenger.
20. How can Esu's teachings inform decision-making?
Pause at the crossroads, consider the consequences, and choose with integrity.
21. How can Esu's teachings support the African diaspora?
Reclaiming Esu from the colonial devil narrative restores dignity to an entire tradition.
