Leipzig's network of waterways has grown by two new attractions
Leipzig continues to expand its waterway network: With the new city harbor and the restoration of the historic Elstermuehlgraben, two major projects will become a reality in 2026. They will make the city even more attractive to water sports enthusiasts, residents, and tourists. After the end of the GDR, an impressive landscape transformation began around Leipzig. Former open-pit lignite mines were flooded, and the Leipziger Neuseenland emerged from the post-mining landscapes. Where coal was mined for decades, lakes and recreational areas now dominate the scenery. Since then, the network of waterways has been continuously expanded and enhanced.
A new milestone is the Leipzig City Harbor, which opened in July 2026. It strengthens the connection between the city center and the water and offers a new starting point for recreational activities and water tourism. This brings Leipzig closer to its goal of even more closely linking the city, its rivers, and the surrounding lakes.
Another highlight is the restoration of the Elstermuehlgraben.
Originally constructed in the 12th century, parts of this waterway had been piped over during the GDR era. Its restoration now closes an important gap in Leipzig's river network. During the test flooding, the water level was initially still low. Once the project is fully completed, however, canoeists should be able to travel along a continuous waterway all the way to the Saale.
In this way, Leipzig is reclaiming a piece of its historic waterfront landscape while simultaneously creating new opportunities for tourism. Waterways thus become a unique experience where the city's history and nature come together. The eventful history of Leipzig's waterway network is detailed in the eBook "Leipzig - New Construction, Renovation, and Decay"
