A trip to the Greek oracle site of Delphi
Anyone who wants to understand ancient Greece should take a trip to the famous oracle site of Delphi. Located high on the slopes of Mount Parnassus, the site was considered the "navel of the world" in ancient times. Here, kings, generals, and ordinary citizens consulted the oracle of the god Apollo to seek advice on important decisions. Even today, Delphi attracts visitors from all over the world--not only because of its impressive ruins, but also because of its spectacular landscape. The ideal starting point for this trip is Athens. From the Greek capital, Delphi can be reached in about two and a half hours by car or bus. The journey itself is an experience: the road first leads along the Gulf of Corinth, past small coastal towns and vast olive groves. Particularly impressive is the plain of Amfissa, home to one of the largest contiguous olive groves in Greece.
Many travelers choose to stay in the small mountain town of Arachova, just a few kilometers from Delphi. This charming place is considered one of the most beautiful mountain resorts in Greece. Its stone houses with red tiled roofs nestle on the hillside, narrow streets invite you to stroll, and regional specialties are served in the taverns. Arachova is particularly famous for its spicy Formaela cheese, hand-woven carpets, and traditional textiles. It is well worth taking a stroll through the village: from the central square, you have a magnificent view of the valley and the surrounding mountains of Parnassus. Caf?s and small shops characterize the lively village, and in the evening, the taverns serving regional cuisine create a particularly cozy atmosphere.
The next morning, the journey continues to the actual oracle site of Delphi. Among the most important sights are the Temple of Apollo, where the priestess Pythia once proclaimed her prophecies, the ancient theater, and the stadium above the complex. A visit to the Archaeological Museum rounds off the tour: important finds are on display here, including the famous bronze statue of the charioteer of Delphi. A trip to Delphi combines history, culture, and nature in a unique way. Anyone who visits the place will quickly understand why it was considered one of the holiest places in Greece in ancient times.
