Meet the Orishas: A Complete Guide to the Yoruba Forces That

DETROIT, MI - August 20, 2026 - What if the forces described in one of the world's oldest living African spiritual traditions could also be understood as a map of human experience-choice, work, love, justice, transformation, destiny, healing, wealth, ancestry and the natural world? Orisha University has published a comprehensive public guide introducing readers to the Orishas and to the Yoruba spiritual framework in which they are understood.

Rather than presenting the Orishas as a distant mythology, the guide approaches them as living spiritual principles connected to everyday human experience. Each Orisha is associated with particular forces of nature and dimensions of life, while Ori-the individual consciousness and destiny of a person-stands at the center of the system.

The guide is taught by Ajarn Shaman Shu - Oluwo Jolaoso Osainbola - an initiated Oluwo of Ifa whose initiation was endorsed by the Araba Agbaye of Ile-Ife, Nigeria, according to the source material supplied for this release.

WHAT AN ORISHA IS

An Orisha is not presented here as a god in the conventional Western sense. Above all stands Olodumare, the Supreme Source. The Orishas are described as expressions or faces of that Source turned toward creation, each associated with a domain of nature and a corresponding dimension of human experience.

Yoruba tradition speaks of four hundred and one Orishas-a number meaning "more than can be counted." What follows introduces principal Orishas highlighted in the guide.

ORI - THE ORISHA YOU ALREADY ARE

Before any other, there is Ori: your own consciousness, your personal destiny, the head that chose this life before you were born. No Orisha can bless a person without the consent of their Ori. This is the foundation of the entire system. The outer Orishas cannot override the inner one. Yoruba practice begins not with worship but with alignment-matching daily choices to the destiny one's own head selected.

ESHU - THE OPENER OF THE WAY

Domain: crossroads, communication, choice, divine messenger. Colors: red and black. Number: 3. Eshu (Elegba, Elegua) is honored first in every ceremony, according to the guide. He carries messages between humanity and the Orishas and governs the crossroads-every point where a life could go two ways. The guide emphasizes that Eshu is frequently and wrongly equated with the Christian devil; he is not. He is described as the principle of choice itself and the consequence that follows it.

OGUN - IRON AND LABOR

Domain: iron, tools, war, technology, clearing the path. Colors: green and black. Number: 7. Ogun cut the first path from heaven to earth with his machete so the other Orishas could descend. He governs things made of metal-the blade, plow, engine and surgeon's scalpel-and represents the force of work and the willingness to cut through what blocks you.

OSOOSI - THE HUNTER

Domain: tracking, precision, justice, the hunt. Colors: blue and amber. Number: 3. Osoosi is described as the hunter who never misses, governing focus, the single arrow and pursuit of what sustains you. In many houses he is paired with Ogun and Eshu as the Warriors-the three who clear, open and aim.

OBATALA - THE KING OF THE WHITE CLOTH

Domain: creation of the human body, purity, wisdom, the head, ethics. Color: white. Number: 8. Obatala molded human bodies from clay and represents clarity, restraint and moral authority. The guide also describes him as patron of those born with physical difference.

YEMOJA - MOTHER OF WATERS

Domain: motherhood, the ocean and rivers, protection, the womb. Colors: blue and white. Number: 7. Yemoja is described as the mother of many Orishas and, by extension, of everyone. She governs amniotic waters, family and maternal protection.

OSHUN - SWEET WATER

Domain: love, fertility, beauty, wealth, diplomacy, the arts. Colors: yellow and gold. Number: 5. Oshun is associated with river water, honey and attraction. In the sacred stories described by the guide, when creation stalled, Oshun restored it. She is presented as a necessary force rather than a merely decorative figure.

SHANGO - THUNDER AND KINGSHIP

Domain: lightning, fire, justice, drumming, virility, rulership. Colors: red and white. Number: 6. Shango was a living king of Oyo before becoming an Orisha. He governs thunder, the double-headed axe, righteous force and the drum, representing justice and the responsibilities of power.

OYA - THE WIND OF CHANGE

Domain: storms, wind, the marketplace, the gates of the cemetery, transformation. Colors: burgundy and nine colors. Number: 9. Oya is described as the storm front before Shango's thunder, governing upheaval, transformation and the boundary between the living and the dead.

ORUNMILA - WITNESS TO DESTINY

Domain: wisdom, divination, destiny, the Ifa corpus. Colors: green and yellow. Number: 16. Orunmila is described as the witness to destiny, while Ifa is his system. The guide describes 256 Odu generated from eight binary positions, with each Odu holding verses, prohibitions, remedies and precedent.

OSANYIN - THE HERBS

Domain: plant medicine, leaves, healing. Number: 7. Osanyin holds the secret of the leaves, and the guide states that ceremonies and healing practices draw on his knowledge.

BABALU-AYE - DISEASE AND HEALING

Domain: illness, epidemic, recovery, the earth. Colors: purple and sackcloth. Number: 17. Also called Obaluaye and Shopona, Babalu-Aye is described as governing both sickness and cure and as the Orisha of those the world has cast out.

OLOKUN - THE DEEP

Domain: the ocean floor, hidden wealth, the unconscious, the unmeasured. Number: 7. Where Yemoja is described as the surface of the water, Olokun represents what lies beneath it-unfathomable, holding both immeasurable wealth and what the ocean has swallowed.

AGANJU - VOLCANO AND WILDERNESS

Domain: volcanoes, deserts, the ferryman, raw earth force. Number: 9. Aganju governs the molten core, untraveled wilderness and passage across difficult terrain.

NANA BURUKU - THE PRIMORDIAL MOTHER

Domain: ancient mud, ancestral memory, the marsh. Number: 7. Nana Buruku is described as older than most of the pantheon and associated with primordial mud and ancestral memory.

IBEJI - THE SACRED TWINS

Domain: twins, children, joy, doubled fortune. Number: 2. Ibeji are honored in connection with twins, childhood, play and the multiplication of blessing.

ERINLE, OBA AND YEWA

Erinle (Inle) is described as physician and fisherman, healer of body and mind. Oba, river Orisha and wife of Shango, governs loyalty and sacrifice made without return. Yewa keeps the cemetery and the boundary of the untouchable.

THE ANCESTORS

Beyond the Orishas stand Egungun, the collective ancestral dead, and the Iyami, the primordial mothers. Yoruba practice holds that the dead remain part of the family and are consulted, fed and answered to.

THE TEACHER BEHIND THE CURRICULUM

The tradition teaches that Ori is chosen before birth and that a life's work is to return to it. Ajarn Shaman Shu - born Robert Shumake in Detroit - describes his own path in those terms.

Before his initiations, he built and lost a career at scale in private equity and real estate. What followed was a reordering: initiation in Ifa at Ile-Ife, in Tibetan Buddhist and Hindu/Dravidian lineages, and the founding of seven religious universities under Buddha Digital Temple to put that training in reach of people who would never otherwise get near it.

His civic and humanitarian work has run alongside it, including a school built in Ethiopia, water access projects in Kenya, and a prison correspondence ministry that provides spiritual education to incarcerated students.

WHY THIS MATTERS NOW

Yoruba spiritual traditions traveled across the Atlantic through the history of the African diaspora and developed in different cultural settings. The guide connects this legacy with traditions including Santeria in Cuba, Candomble in Brazil, Vodun in Haiti and Benin, and Orisha worship across the Americas.

For readers approaching Yoruba spirituality as a serious field of study, Orisha University offers structured educational resources and classes.
