Explosive Growth in Automotive Infrared Night Vision -

Hangzhou, Zhejiang, China - August 18, 2026 - Explosive Growth in Automotive Infrared Night Vision-Are Filter Manufacturers Ready?

Let's start with a number. According to research reports on China's smart vehicle sensor market, the compound annual growth rate for automotive infrared sensors from 2026 to 2030 is projected to exceed 30%. At this pace, the related market size could reach tens of billions of yuan by 2030-a clear sign that this segment is accelerating its transition from "premium option" to "mainstream choice."

Why Now?

Three forces are converging.

First, regulation. Euro NCAP has already incorporated DMS requirements into its safety ratings starting in 2025-driver fatigue monitoring is now a scoring item. The U.S. NHTSA has also issued new rules for Level 2 ADAS, requiring at least one driver state sensing solution. In China, from 2027, all new passenger cars and trucks equipped with Level 2 or higher ADAS will be required to have DMS factory-installed. These mandates have effectively pushed infrared sensing from "nice-to-have" to "must-have."

Second, falling costs. Automotive infrared systems used to be prohibitively expensive-a complete infrared night vision system could cost over ten thousand yuan, limiting it to ultra-luxury models like the Mercedes-Benz S-Class or BMW 7 Series. But with the localization of detector chips, volume production of near-infrared illuminator modules, and improving yields on upstream optical components-filters, AR coatings-the BOM cost has dropped to a more palatable level. Some production models now have infrared night vision systems costing under a few thousand yuan, making it feasible for vehicles in the 200,000-yuan range.

Third, the intelligence race. Competition among Chinese NEV manufacturers has reached fever pitch, with everyone chasing differentiation in smart cabins and autonomous driving. Infrared night vision's advantage in poor nighttime and adverse weather-unaffected by glare, able to detect pedestrians and obstacles 200-300 meters ahead-is exactly the kind of tangible differentiator that sells. "This car sees farther and clearer than I do" is an easy message for consumers to grasp.

What Technical Roadmaps Are Automotive Infrared Systems Using?

Currently, automotive infrared follows two main technical paths: far-infrared thermal imaging and near-infrared structured light/ToF.

The far-infrared thermal imaging approach uses bolometer (microbolometer) or cooled detectors. The former requires no cooling and is low-cost, but sensitivity and resolution are somewhat limited. The latter offers extremely high sensitivity, with NETD below 20mK, but requires a Stirling cooler to maintain cryogenic temperatures around 77K. Both approaches visualize thermal radiation-humans and animals appear as bright silhouettes, vehicle hoods are bright, and the surrounding environment is relatively dark. The advantage is all-weather operation. The downside: no color information, and algorithmic interpretation requires a learning curve.

The near-infrared approach uses InGaAs detector arrays operating in the 0.9-1.7m band, paired with 850nm or 940nm IR illuminators. This delivers near-visible image quality (with depth and texture) and extremely fast response, making it well-suited for dynamic tracking. The trade-off is cost-InGaAs chips are significantly more expensive than microbolometers, and pixel sizes tend to be smaller.

Whichever path is chosen, one component is common-and its performance often determines the system's upper limit: the narrowband filter.

Narrowband Filters: The Hidden Bottleneck in Automotive Infrared

In automotive infrared systems, the filter's job is to block environmental stray light while allowing only the target band to reach the detector. But in the automotive environment, the challenges are far more demanding than in typical industrial applications.

First, consider the temperature range. Automotive operating temperatures span from -40 degrees C to 105 degrees C and beyond. Ordinary optical components will drift significantly across this range-center wavelengths shift with temperature, and transmittance curves broaden or narrow. For automotive-grade filters, thermal drift must remain below plus-minus 0.01nm/ degrees C to maintain stability. MULTI IR's automotive-grade filters incorporate dedicated temperature-compensation designs to ensure spectral performance remains stable across extreme temperature differentials.

Second, consistency. A single vehicle may use a dozen or more infrared sensing modules, each requiring filters with identical specifications. If batch-to-batch center wavelength variations are too wide, imaging quality will differ between modules, leading to an awkward situation where "this angle works but that one doesn't." Automotive consistency requirements are far stricter than consumer electronics-typically, center wavelength deviation within a batch must be less than plus-minus 2nm, and peak transmittance deviation less than plus-minus 1%.

Third, automotive qualification. The AEC-Q200 standard is the entry-level requirement for passive automotive components, but infrared optical components face even tougher reliability tests: high-temperature/high-humidity (85 degrees C/85% RH for 1000 continuous hours), thermal shock (-40 degrees C left and right 125 degrees C for 500 cycles), and vibration (random vibration spectra per UN ECE R118). These tests are not lab formalities-they are part of real automotive validation. Suppliers that can pass all automotive qualification requirements will hold a strong position in the automotive supply chain.

The Window of Opportunity

The market window for automotive infrared night vision is roughly three to five years. The pattern during this window is: hardware first, software and algorithms later. Just like GPS navigation-once the hardware is in place, subsequent map updates and ADAS feature upgrades become the value-add stage.

For filter suppliers, this is the moment to lock in position. Once an OEM or Tier 1 supplier has finalized its optical architecture and completed automotive validation, switching suppliers becomes extremely costly-re-qualification typically takes 18 to 24 months, covering sample testing, DV testing, PV testing, and production ramp-up. Whoever enters the supply chain first is well-positioned to secure orders for the next five to ten years.

The competitive landscape for automotive infrared supply is still relatively fragmented. A few established optical players occupy part of the high-end market, while a group of emerging Chinese companies are catching up. But truly competitive suppliers-those that can deliver on precision, consistency, and qualification simultaneously-are still few. That means the window for leadership is still open.

Companies like MULTI IR, with years of deep expertise in infrared filters, have already established automotive-grade product lines. These not only cover the 850nm/940nm bands used in DMS but are also extending into the long-wave infrared bands required for thermal imaging. This "broad multi-band coverage plus deep vertical specialization" strategy aligns well with the rapidly evolving requirements of automotive infrared solutions.

Automotive infrared night vision is not a new concept-Mercedes-Benz used it two decades ago. But this is the first time it's truly moving toward mainstream adoption. The catalyst is no longer just premium branding, but the convergence of regulatory mandates, cost reduction, and competition in the NEV space.

For filter manufacturers, the logic in the automotive space is clear: high barriers to entry, long replacement cycles, and predictable volume. Enter early, lock in early. The question is whether you can stand firm at that qualification threshold.
