Over the past few years, anyone shopping for or test-driving a new car might have noticed a subtle shift: the car seems to "understand" you better. It warns you when you're getting drowsy behind the wheel. It senses whether the passenger seat is occupied and adjusts the climate control accordingly. Some models even automatically tweak seat positions and ambient lighting based on the driver's state. Behind many of these experiences lies the accelerating penetration of in-cabin infrared sensing technology-driven not only by maturing technology but also by evolving regulations and intensifying product competition.
The numbers tell the story best. In 2025, the global Driver Monitoring System (DMS) market was valued at over $4.72 billion. In China, the passenger car DMS penetration rate jumped from under 6% in 2020 to 31.5%, while the commercial vehicle segment hit 57.3%. By Q1 2026, the passenger car DMS adoption rate climbed further to 41.3%. And the curve is still steepening.

What Problems Is In-Cabin Infrared Sensing Actually Solving?
The most mature application today is the Driver Monitoring System (DMS). It typically uses a near-infrared illuminator-most commonly at 940nm, a wavelength nearly invisible to the human eye to avoid distracting the driver-paired with an image sensor to capture facial features and eyelid movement in real time. Using PERCLOS (percentage of eyelid closure over time) and other metrics, the system determines whether the driver is fatigued or distracted. The reason this is done with near-infrared rather than visible-light cameras is straightforward: near-infrared imaging is immune to poor nighttime lighting, sunglasses, and harsh backlight conditions. For a safety-critical system, that kind of all-weather, all-scenario reliability is non-negotiable.

At the heart of this chain is the 940nm narrowband filter, which plays a critical role in signal purity. It must precisely isolate the 940nm passband (such as MULTI IR's 940nm narrowband filter, with passbands tailored to specific requirements) while blocking visible light and near-infrared interference from sunlight, ensuring the detector receives only the system's own emitted IR signal. The 940nm band happens to fall in a water vapor absorption band of the atmosphere, where solar radiation reaching the ground is noticeably weaker-this means even under strong daylight, the filter effectively suppresses background noise, preserving the DMS system's signal-to-noise ratio.
Beyond the driver, Occupant Monitoring Systems (OMS) represent another major arena for infrared sensing. Using infrared sensors combined with Time-of-Flight (ToF) ranging technology, the system can determine whether a seat is occupied and estimate occupant size-directly impacting airbag deployment strategies and enabling child presence detection to prevent hot-car tragedies. This functionality, increasingly discussed in legislation across multiple regions, is gradually shifting from "optional" to "mandatory." On top of that, some premium models are beginning to integrate infrared temperature-sensing modules for zone-specific climate control and even physiological monitoring-an indication that smart cabins are evolving from "feature available" to "experience refined."
Why Is Demand Accelerating Now?
In-cabin infrared sensing isn't new technology. But historically, it was limited to a handful of high-end models-a "nice-to-have" rather than a "must-have," and penetration rates stayed low for years. That's now changing structurally, driven by three converging forces.
First, regulation. Safety rating systems like Euro NCAP have incorporated driver monitoring into their scoring criteria-meaning automakers that want top marks in crash tests and safety assessments can hardly afford to skip DMS. More critically, by 2026, new vehicles in the EU, China, and North America face mandatory DMS requirements: the EU mandates that from July 2026, all newly registered vehicles must be equipped with driver distraction warning systems. China's new national standard requires that from January 2027, all new passenger cars and trucks with Level 2 ADAS must have DMS factory-installed. These mandates are pushing DMS from "optional" to "standard" virtually overnight.

Second, falling costs. With volume production of infrared detectors and near-infrared illuminator modules, plus mature domestic supply chain alternatives, the total system cost of a complete DMS solution has dropped significantly in recent years. This has made automakers much more willing to equip mid- and low-trim models, rather than reserving the feature for premium lines. In 2025, China's passenger car DMS factory shipments surpassed 4.72 million units; in the first five months of 2026, penetration had already reached 26%.

Third, competitive differentiation. As NEV manufacturers compete intensely around "smart cabin" experiences, technologies like infrared sensing-which translate directly into user-perceptible "the car understands you" moments-have become natural marketing assets. Automakers are actively investing in this direction because it differentiates them in ways customers can actually feel.
What Does This Mean for the Upstream Supply Chain?
Automotive-grade infrared sensing imposes far higher standards on component consistency, wide-temperature reliability, and qualification requirements than consumer electronics. Typically, these components must meet AEC-Q100 and other automotive reliability standards, with operating temperature ranges spanning -40 degrees C to 105 degrees C or wider, along with stringent lot-to-lot consistency and long-term stability. For upstream filter and sensor manufacturers, this represents both a technical barrier and a differentiation opportunity. Companies that can reliably pass automotive-grade validation and maintain consistent volume delivery will be well-positioned in this penetration cycle.
