William Catlett Says Many People Don't Realize They Have a Legal Issue Until It's Too Late
Image: https://www.globalnewslines.com/uploads/2026/08/1786628921.jpgSt. Louis, MO - August 15, 2026 - Some of the most costly legal mistakes happen long before anyone steps into a courtroom. According to William Catlett attorney [https://www.williamcatlettattorney.com/] and experienced legal advocate, many people delay seeking legal guidance because they do not recognise that the situation they are facing has legal consequences.
His comments reflect findings from the American Bar Foundation's research on civil legal needs, which found that many people do not seek help from a lawyer because they are unsure whether their problem is actually a legal issue. The research also found that many civil legal problems receive little or no legal assistance, often leaving people to navigate important decisions on their own.
"People often assume they should wait until a situation becomes serious before speaking with an attorney," says Catlett. "By then, some of the most important decisions may have already been made."
Rather than viewing legal guidance as something reserved for emergencies, Catlett believes people benefit from understanding their rights and responsibilities as early as possible.
Why Early Legal Guidance Can Make a Difference
During more than three decades of legal practice, Catlett has seen the same pattern across a wide range of cases. A disagreement between parents can grow into a custody dispute. Financial difficulties may lead someone to consider bankruptcy only after creditors have already taken action. Families sometimes wait until a loved one loses capacity before learning how complicated guardianship proceedings can become without planning.
According to Catlett, these situations may look different, but they often share one thing in common. People do not always recognise when a personal problem has become a legal one.
"My job isn't simply to respond after a problem grows," Catlett says. "It's to help clients understand what they're facing so they can make informed decisions before small issues become much larger ones."
Throughout his career, Catlett has represented clients in family law, bankruptcy, guardianships, probate administration, criminal defence, mental illness proceedings and real estate matters. Working across multiple areas of law has shown him how one legal issue can quickly affect another, making it important to understand the full picture before taking action.
He believes early legal guidance is not about assuming the worst. Instead, it is about helping people understand their options while there is still time to make informed decisions.
"The earlier someone understands the legal side of their situation, the more opportunities they usually have," Catlett says. "Good decisions are easier to make when people know their rights and understand the process."
As legal matters continue to grow more complex, Catlett believes attorneys have an important role to play in educating the public as well as representing clients.
"Success is measured by protecting my clients' rights while helping them achieve the best possible outcome under the law," he says.
