Press release from: ORDRE DE L'ETOILE DU SUD

ONG Ordre de l'Etoile du Sud

PARIS, August 14, 2026 - The Order of the Southern Star (Ordre de l'Étoile du Sud), a French non-governmental organization (NGO) working on behalf of the Mapuche people and the preservation of their cultural and historical heritage, will take part in the UNPO international conference on self-determination in The Hague, Netherlands, on August 27-28, 2026.

The participation marks a new stage in the international development of the NGO, following several months of activities in Chile focused on engagement in Wallmapu, cooperation with local institutions and international dialogue on the rights of Indigenous peoples.
UNPO Conference on Self-Determination
Marking its 35th anniversary, the Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization (UNPO) is hosting the international conference "Re-imagining Self-Determination" in The Hague.
The conference will bring together representatives of UNPO member peoples and nations, civil society organizations, legal experts, academics and other international actors. Discussions will focus on issues including self-determination, representation and international solidarity.
For the Order of the Southern Star, participation in the conference provides an opportunity to exchange views on issues affecting the Mapuche people, present its experience in Chile and develop new contacts with organizations and international actors working on Indigenous peoples' rights.
Engagement in Wallmapu
The NGO's participation in the UNPO conference follows activities already undertaken in Wallmapu, the historic territory of the Mapuche people.
A mission carried out in Chile in 2026 enabled representatives of the Order of the Southern Star to meet communities and local stakeholders, discuss their concerns directly and identify areas for future cooperation.
This field-based approach forms an important part of the organization's activities, complementing its cultural, historical and heritage initiatives with direct engagement and cooperation in Chile.
Cooperation With the Municipality of Perquenco
The NGO's work has also resulted in institutional cooperation with a Chilean municipality.
In July 2026, the Order of the Southern Star and the Municipality of Perquenco signed a Declaration of Friendship and Mutual Cooperation covering historical, cultural and heritage-related initiatives.
The partnership aims to contribute to the preservation and promotion of Perquenco's historical heritage, including its links with Araucania, Orélie-Antoine de Tounens and the historical relationship with the Mapuche people.
The agreement reflects the NGO's approach of developing direct relationships with local institutions and supporting practical cultural and heritage initiatives.
Mapuche Human Rights and International Dialogue
The Order of the Southern Star also operates a Mapuche Human Rights Commission, focusing on issues relating to Mapuche rights, culture and international representation.
This work complements the NGO's activities in Chile and contributes to its participation in wider international discussions concerning Indigenous peoples, cultural identity and human rights.
The UNPO conference in The Hague will therefore bring together several strands of the organization's work: engagement in Wallmapu, cooperation with Chilean institutions, preservation of Mapuche heritage and international dialogue on self-determination and Indigenous peoples' rights.
For Laurent Lafayne, Prince Antoine V of Araucania and Patagonia and Honorary President of the Order of the Southern Star, the participation represents "a new step in bringing an action based on presence, cooperation and concrete initiatives in Chile to the international level."
Through its participation in the UNPO conference, the Order of the Southern Star intends to further develop its international relationships while continuing its work in support of the Mapuche people, their culture, heritage and rights.
