Before Uncle Tupelo, Before Wilco: Jason and the Scorchers Invented Alt-Country

The genre that defined American roots music in the 1990s had already been alive since 1981 -- built in Nashville by four musicians who refused to choose between Hank Williams and The Ramones.

Jason & the Scorchers had been doing it since 1981 -- blending country music and rock and roll with a rawness and sincerity that neither genre's gatekeepers knew how to categorize. The alt-country movement didn't emerge from thin air. It came from Nashville, Tennessee, and it came from four musicians who refused to choose between Hank Williams and The Ramones.

Jason Ringenberg arrived in Nashville on July 4, 1981, having been shaped by two musical forces that seemed incompatible: the classic country he heard on his father's truck radio growing up on a Sheffield, Illinois hog farm, and the punk rock he discovered at Southern Illinois University after seeing The Ramones perform in a dorm cafeteria. Rather than choose between them, he brought both to Nashville and found bandmates who shared his appetite for collision. Warner Hodges on guitar, Jeff Johnson on bass, and Perry Baggs on drums completed the lineup of what would become one of the most important American bands of the 1980s.

Their 1983 EP Fervor set the template. Robert Christgau described their music as "crossing Gram Parsons's knowledge of sin with Joe Ely's hellbent determination to get away with it." That framing captures what Jason & the Scorchers understood before anyone else: that country music and rock and roll weren't opposites. They were the same American tradition, separated by marketing. The band's cover of Bob Dylan's "Absolutely Sweet Marie" on that EP became a signal to musicians everywhere that the merger was not just possible -- it was explosive.

By the time Lost & Found arrived in 1985 -- produced by Terry Manning and widely considered the band's masterpiece -- Jason & the Scorchers had built a following across college radio, the American underground, and the British music press, which embraced them far more warmly than American radio ever did. The NME called them "the greatest rock showmen of 1985." Entertainment Weekly would later write that they were "the only legitimate living incarnation of the Rolling Stones." None of that translated to mainstream radio success, because the stations couldn't decide which bin to put them in. That problem became the genre's founding story.

The artists who came after owe them directly. Dwight Yoakam, the Kentucky Headhunters, the Mavericks, BR5-49, and Kings of Leon all carry traces of what Jason & the Scorchers built. The Americana Music Association recognized them with its Lifetime Achievement Award in Performance in 2008. Jason Ringenberg said it plainly: "We completely bypassed the Nashville establishment and created our own system. We absolutely knew we were creating a new type of music." They were right, and the rest of American roots music eventually caught up.
