UK Exports to DACH Reach £93.2bn as Britain Loses Market Share

NOTTINGHAM, United Kingdom, 1 August 2026 - UK exports to Germany, Austria and Switzerland reached approximately £93.2 billion in 2025, but new analysis of official trade figures shows that Britain's share of all three markets has declined over the past decade.

The analysis, published by Nottingham-based international SEO consultant Rüdiger Dalchow of Grumpy Old SEO, combines the latest country trade factsheets from the UK Department for Business and Trade. These are based primarily on Office for National Statistics data.

Germany remained by far the largest of the three markets, receiving £62.4 billion in UK goods and services during 2025. UK exports to Switzerland totalled £26.6 billion, while exports to Austria reached £4.2 billion.

Together, the three German-speaking markets-often referred to as the DACH region-accounted for approximately £40.8 billion in UK goods exports and £52.3 billion in services.

The total value of UK exports to DACH increased from approximately £72.5 billion in 2016 to £93.2 billion in 2025, equivalent to nominal growth of around 29%. Compared with 2020, when exports were worth £77.3 billion, the increase was approximately 21%.

However, the market-share figures present a less reassuring picture.
The UK's share of trade in Germany fell from 5.7% in 2015 to 4.5% in 2024. In Austria, Britain's share declined from 2.0% to 1.8%, while its share of the Swiss market fell from 7.5% to 5.5%.

This means UK companies are exporting more to the region while capturing a smaller share of the available market.

The export values are expressed in current prices and have not been adjusted for inflation or exchange-rate movements. They were also affected by the pandemic, Brexit-related changes, supply-chain disruption and, particularly in Switzerland, movements in precious-metals trade.

The figures should therefore not be interpreted as a simple measure of business performance. They do, however, show that increasing export revenue does not necessarily mean that the UK's competitive position is improving.

"Rising exports look reassuring until market share is compared," said Rüdiger Dalchow. "British companies are selling more into Germany, Austria and Switzerland, but competing countries and suppliers are capturing more of the market. For businesses that are discovered and evaluated online, an English-only website is not a neutral choice."

Official trade statistics do not identify how much of the £93.2 billion was generated directly through websites. Presenting the total as ecommerce revenue would therefore be misleading.

The importance of websites is broader than online checkout revenue, particularly for services, software and considered business-to-business purchases. Buyers may discover a supplier through search, review its services and credentials online, and use the website to decide whether the company belongs on a shortlist, even when the final contract is agreed offline.

German businesses and consumers already make extensive use of digital channels. Germany's Federal Statistical Office reported that 83% of people aged between 16 and 74 bought or ordered something online in 2024. KfW Research also found that approximately 868,000 German SMEs generated €306 billion from online sales of products and services during the year.

Dalchow said UK companies should not assume that an English-language website will provide adequate visibility across the region.

Germany, Austria and Switzerland share a language to varying degrees, but they are not one uniform market. Terminology, currencies, regulations, payment preferences, commercial expectations and competitive conditions can all differ.
Businesses considering DACH expansion should first establish whether relevant demand exists, which countries offer a commercially viable opportunity and what buyers need to see before trusting the company.

"If the German-speaking markets matter to a UK business, postponing German-language visibility is still a decision," Dalchow added. "It leaves competing suppliers to be found first."
