Today, companies invest an enormous amount of energy in areas where they have the least control. Social media profiles, marketplace listings, directory entries--present everywhere, but never truly at home. What was an acceptable compromise in recent years is becoming a structural risk in the age of AI.

Rented Ground

The comparison isn't new, but rarely has it been so apt: Those who build their visibility on platforms don't own their audience--they rent it. Studies on organic reach on major platforms have shown the same trend for years: A large portion of unpaid content is barely promoted by algorithms anymore; organic reach for business profiles now hovers in the low single-digit percentage range. One rule change, one algorithm update--and the visibility painstakingly built up vanishes overnight. This is no exception; it's the very foundation of the platform's business model: the platform decides who sees whom, not the company.

Why this is becoming more urgent, not less

One might think that in an AI-mediated world, a company's own website would play an even smaller role--after all, users just ask their assistants anyway. The opposite is true. AI response systems like ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google AI Overviews provide a single synthesized answer based on a handful of sources. They don't select these sources based on advertising budgets, but rather on what they can reliably read, understand, and cite.

This is precisely where the difference lies: A Princeton study on "Generative Engine Optimization" found that content featuring reliable citations, statistics, and structured data is cited up to 40 percent more frequently in AI-generated responses. Industry analyses by BrightEdge paint a similar picture: structured data and a clear FAQ structure increased the citation rate by 44 percent in one study. The common denominator: For AI to cite something, it must first be machine-readable, unambiguous, and backed by first-hand evidence.

First-Party Data as a Structural Necessity

This also shifts the importance of first-party data--a company's own, directly collected data. According to the IAB report "State of Data," 71 percent of brands, agencies, and publishers are now actively expanding their first-party data sets--nearly twice as many as two years ago. The reason is no longer just data protection: According to industry observers, AI-powered decision-making systems require a clear, traceable data source--something that cannot be reliably established structurally using third-party data. Initial analyses also reveal a significant commercial difference: in one study, campaigns based on first-party data achieved a revenue impact 2.9 times higher than those using third-party data.

Legislators are also moving in this direction: The EU Data Act will require cloud and platform providers, starting in September 2026, to facilitate interoperability and remove technical barriers to switching--a regulatory acknowledgment that lock-in effects in rented digital infrastructures are a real, addressable problem.

The one place that truly belongs to you

Amid all this lies a single, unspectacular fact: A company's own domain is the only part of its digital presence over which it has complete control. No algorithm decides its visibility, no terms of use can change it overnight, and no terms-of-service update can shut it down. Everything a company systematically stores there--consistent facts, properly tagged data, a traceable factual foundation--remains a reliable source, no matter which platform is currently in vogue or which AI system is currently providing the answers.

A Personal Experiment

I've put this theory to the test on my own infrastructure--I haven't just made a claim. With btlabs Core, the CMS platform I've been building since 2025 for businesses in South Tyrol, every piece of business information--opening hours, services, contact details--exists exactly once, in one place. From there, it's simultaneously served as a readable website, as structured JSON-LD data, as a machine-readable llms.txt file, and as a queryable interface for AI systems. If a phone number changes, it changes everywhere--because there's only one source. This doesn't automatically ensure a business's visibility; it merely makes it consistent--the rest (content, trust, relationships) must still be built by the business itself.

The practical implication is unspectacular but essential: structuring business data doesn't mean introducing yet another tool. It means treating the one place in the digital space that you actually control as such--as a foundation, not as a side issue.
