Travel eSIM Market Faces Device-Level Disruption as Smartphone Manufacturers Embed Global Connectivity Into the User Experience
July 17, 2026 - International mobile connectivity is moving closer to the point where travel begins: the smartphone itself. Motorola's July 2026 launch of Global Connect, powered by Gigs, gives eligible users access to data plans covering more than 160 countries through a Motorola-branded experience. The service currently operates through a downloadable application and is expected to be preinstalled on future supported devices. Against this device-level shift, DataM Intelligence estimates that the travel eSIM market will expand from US$2.24 billion in 2025 to US$125.61 billion by 2033, registering a 65.50% CAGR during 2026-2033.Request Executive Sample | Market Intelligence: https://www.datamintelligence.com/download-sample/travel-esim-market?kailas
2026 Official Developments in Device-Embedded Travel Connectivity
Motorola and Gigs launched Global Connect on July 1, 2026, initially targeting Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Peru and Chile. Germany, the United Kingdom and selected European markets were identified as the next planned expansion areas. Users install one eSIM and can purchase, activate, monitor and top up travel data through the Motorola-branded interface. Eligible users also receive 1 GB of complimentary global data for a limited period.
The development is commercially important because it moves travel connectivity away from a service discovered after a traveler searches an app store. By placing the service within the device environment, Motorola gains an opportunity to influence connectivity selection before an independent travel-eSIM brand or traditional mobile operator reaches the customer.
Embedded distribution also expanded through non-device channels in 2026. Gigs partnered with ShopBack in May to place travel eSIM services within its rewards application across Asia-Pacific. In March, PicPay introduced a global eSIM benefit for selected banking customers, while Gigs and Qonto announced a July partnership enabling business users to manage international connectivity within a financial-management platform.
Distribution Moves Beyond Standalone Travel Applications
Standalone eSIM applications helped establish the category by offering travelers a convenient international roaming alternative. However, the next phase of competition will centre on who controls the earliest and most trusted customer interaction.
Smartphone manufacturers can offer connectivity during device setup, inside network settings or through a preinstalled travel application. Airlines and online travel agencies can introduce a global data plan immediately after a flight or hotel booking. Banks and payment-card providers can package data with travel insurance, airport benefits and foreign-exchange services.
These models reduce the number of decisions required from the traveler, but they also change market economics. Independent brands may continue to compete through destination coverage, pricing and unlimited plans, while embedded providers compete through convenience, loyalty and distribution scale.
Channel Models Create Different Commercial Advantages
The principal travel eSIM channels can be assessed through four distinct models:
- App-direct providers: Independent brands retain control over plan design, pricing, customer data and repeat purchases. Their principal challenge is customer-acquisition cost in an increasingly crowded application market. Comparison shopping can also make customer loyalty difficult to sustain.
- OEM-embedded connectivity: A smartphone OEM eSIM can be presented during device activation or through a native application. This gives the manufacturer a powerful first-touch advantage and can reduce installation friction. The commercial risk is that travelers may still compare prices externally or view the service as unnecessary device software.
- Airline and OTA bundles: Connectivity can be offered alongside flights, accommodation, insurance or destination services. The timing is highly relevant because the traveler has already disclosed the destination and travel dates. However, airlines and travel platforms must manage support expectations for a telecommunications service outside their traditional operations.
- Bank and payment-card benefits: Financial platforms can offer complimentary data, discounted plans or premium connectivity as a loyalty benefit. This model can strengthen account engagement and differentiate higher-value card tiers, but excessive bundling may weaken direct eSIM revenue or create low-usage customers.

Operator Economics and Platform Competition
Travel eSIM providers purchase or aggregate access to mobile networks and repackage that capacity into destination-specific, regional, or global plans. Their growth places pressure on conventional roaming economics because travelers can compare data allowances and prices before departure.
Mobile operators are unlikely to disappear from the value chain. They own the radio networks that ultimately deliver coverage and can respond through more competitive roaming passes, visitor eSIMs, wholesale agreements and direct digital propositions.
Provisioning platforms will become increasingly influential because they connect multiple carriers, payment systems, applications and customer-support processes. A scalable eSIM platform partnership must manage profile delivery, real-time activation, billing, data usage, refunds, plan extensions and network switching without exposing the end user to the underlying complexity.
Coverage quality will remain more important than the number of countries displayed on a product page. Travelers increasingly expect reliable access to navigation, payments, translation, authentication and work applications. Weak local-network selection, traffic routing or support can therefore undermine an otherwise attractive plan.
Fraud, Identity and Cybersecurity Risks Increase
Simplified activation must not eliminate effective risk controls. Fraud can involve stolen payment credentials, account takeovers, manipulated refunds, false affiliate traffic or unauthorised eSIM-profile ordering.
The GSMA states that consumer remote-SIM-provisioning architecture uses security controls, certification and encrypted communication to protect profile delivery. It also notes that operators remain responsible for appropriate identity verification according to local regulations and their customer-verification processes.
As more non-telecom brands embed connectivity, responsibility must be clearly divided across the customer-facing brand, platform provider, mobile operator and payment processor. Cybersecurity, privacy, service recovery and customer support cannot become invisible simply because activation becomes easier.
Decision-Useful Market Segmentation
DataM Intelligence segments the market by solution, device type, end user and region. Smartphones represent the primary device category, while tablets, laptops and wearables provide additional growth opportunities. Individual tourists, frequent travelers, remote workers and business travelers also create different requirements.
Commercial planning increasingly requires further segmentation:
- Plan type: Fixed-data, unlimited, day-pass, regional and global plans.
- Channel: Direct application, OEM-embedded, airline or OTA, financial-services bundle and employer-managed distribution.
- Traveler type: Leisure, business, student, digital nomad, expatriate and event-driven traveler.
- Destination model: Single-country, multi-country regional and reusable global connectivity.
Country and Regional Opportunity Outlook
The United States offers substantial outbound and inbound travel demand, but major postpaid operators retain strong customer relationships. Travel-eSIM providers must demonstrate savings, convenience or destination-specific value rather than rely only on digital activation. Motorola had not announced US availability for Global Connect at launch.
Japan presents an opportunity shaped by advanced mobile infrastructure and international tourism. Ubigi, operated by Transatel within the NTT ecosystem, was selected as the officially licensed eSIM provider for Expo 2025 Osaka and offers connectivity through agreements with more than 300 operators.
Germany is positioned to become an important test market for OEM-led distribution as Motorola expands Global Connect into Europe. Success will depend on plan transparency, local-language support, consumer trust and differentiation from EU roaming arrangements.
Southeast Asia offers strong potential for embedded travel connectivity through super-apps, rewards platforms, banks and digital-payment ecosystems. Gigs' ShopBack partnership illustrates how an eSIM can be positioned inside a broader travel and shopping journey rather than sold as an isolated telecom product.

Strategic Company Profiles
Motorola represents the device-distribution model. Global Connect allows the company to integrate international connectivity more deeply into the ownership experience while creating a potential service-revenue opportunity beyond hardware sales.
Gigs represents the infrastructure layer. Its platform supplies connectivity, hosted checkout, billing, subscription management, analytics and support tools that allow non-telecom brands to launch mobile services without independently negotiating every operational component.
Nomad, a DataM-listed participant, represents the app-direct travel brand. It offers plans across more than 200 destinations and is extending its reach through partnerships, including a 2026 collaboration with beIN SPORTS around major international sporting events.
Transatel, an NTT company, represents the operator and network-enablement layer. Through Ubigi, another DataM-listed participant, it combines telecom agreements, network infrastructure and direct travel connectivity across more than 200 destinations.
"The travel eSIM market is shifting from an application-discovery contest to a distribution and integration contest," said a DataM Intelligence spokesperson. "The strongest positions will be built by providers that combine trusted customer access, consistent coverage, transparent pricing and secure provisioning."
As connectivity becomes embedded across smartphones, travel bookings and financial products, market leadership will depend on channel ownership as much as data-plan pricing. DataM Intelligence provides customised channel-partner mapping, platform benchmarking, destination-level pricing analysis, operator comparison and partnership opportunity assessment for organisations evaluating the global travel eSIM ecosystem.
