A Promise Kept: Anthropologist Documents Every Culture on Earth in "Naked Steps" an Ancestral Odyssey and Leaves Scientific Circles Stunned
A Promise KeptYears ago, Woni Spotts made a promise - to write about every culture on earth. Having become the first Black woman officially recognized as having traveled to every country and continent in the world, that promise has now been fulfilled. Naked Steps: A Timeless Panoramic Ancestral Odyssey is the extraordinary result of that commitment - a work decades in the making, born from lived experience on every continent, in every landscape, among every people on earth.
There is a particular kind of book that does not announce its ambitions. It simply opens, and keeps opening. Woni Spotts's Naked Steps is that kind of book. At 330+ pages, it covers more human ground - geographically, historically, ritually, mythologically - than most academic careers. And it does so with art on every page, in poetic prose, without footnotes, without a thesis to defend, without telling the reader what to conclude.
The result is one of the more unusual works to appear in the space where anthropology, folklore, and cultural history converge. It will not sit comfortably on any single shelf. That is, in the end, one of its more interesting qualities.
A Journey Through Every Culture on Earth
Naked Steps is organized as a global traverse - chapter by chapter through every major human population on earth, from the Khoisan of Southern Africa to the Arctic Circle. Each chapter traces the genetics, archaeology, language, spiritual practice, ritual life, cuisine, art, and mythology of the people in question. The Khoisan chapter opens in Southern Africa with the oldest known human lineage. The Mesopotamian chapter moves through Sumerian lizardmen sculptures and cuneiform tablets recording the Anunnaki. The South Asian chapter weaves the Kandariya Mahadeva Temple, devadasi tradition, Aghori funerary cannibalism, and the thuggee cult alongside classical music, spice trade routes, and the Silk Road.
The breadth is genuinely staggering. And yet the book does not feel like an encyclopedia. It reads more like field notes written by a poet - compressed, imagistic, moving between the visceral and the archival without ceremony.
What Spotts Does That Others Don't
The most methodologically distinctive feature of Naked Steps is its refusal to interpret. Religious texts are cited as they appear. Mythological accounts are placed alongside archaeological and paleontological evidence without a mediating argument. Spotts presents the Loch Ness folklore tradition and dragon sightings from multiple cultures in the same breath as the ichthyosaurs, plesiosaurs, and ammonites preserved in the cliffs of the Jurassic Coast. She does not resolve the juxtaposition. She moves on.
This is a choice, and a considered one. Spotts treats cryptids, mythological creatures, and legendary beings the way anthropologists treat oral tradition - as cultural data embedded in human experience, worth documenting and examining without the reflex to debunk or confirm. The approach will frustrate readers who want conclusions. It rewards those willing to sit with open questions.
The same evenhandedness applies to the book's treatment of taboo material. Cannibalism appears across multiple chapters - not as spectacle, but as a recurring structural phenomenon in funerary and ritual practice across unconnected cultures. Human sacrifice, secret societies, mystery schools, institutionalized practices that have been largely removed from public-facing historical narratives - Spotts documents them with the same flat, observational voice she applies to architecture or cuisine. Nothing is sensationalized. Nothing is sanitized.
An Unexpected Chapter
One chapter stands apart from the rest in both scope and depth: the Black America chapter. Where other chapters trace ancient populations across millennia, this one moves from the genetics of the African diaspora through rebellion, abolition, military service, architecture, invention, sport, cuisine, music, and cultural expression - a comprehensive record of a people whose history has been systematically fragmented and obscured. It is the longest and most detailed chapter in the book, and its placement within a global anthropological survey makes a quiet but unmistakable argument: that Black American culture is a fully formed ethnogenesis, as ancient and complex as any civilization documented here.
Who Wrote This, and Why It Matters
Woni Spotts is an anthropologist and the first Black woman officially recognized as having traveled to every country and continent in the world - a record certified in 2023 by the World Records Union. Born in Los Angeles, she holds a BA, MA, and PhD ABD in Philosophy with a concentration in Anthropology. She has sailed to Antarctica, crossed the International Date Line, traversed the Galapagos, and documented her journeys since a 1989 documentary called Passing Through.
This matters for how Naked Steps should be read. The book is not the product of library research alone. It is the work of someone who has stood in every landscape described, who has encountered the communities, sacred sites, and living traditions documented here. That experiential authority is present on every page, even when it is not announced.
Where the Book Asks the Most of Its Reader
Readers who want discursive argument, citation apparatus, or theoretical framing will not find it here. The book trusts the reader to do interpretive work that most books do on the reader's behalf.
That is both the book's greatest strength and its most significant demand. Naked Steps is not written for passive consumption. It is written to be experienced - as Spotts herself puts it, each page is designed to be experienced, not just read. For readers willing to meet it on those terms, it offers something genuinely rare: a single work that holds the full scope of human culture, in all its beauty, violence, and strangeness, without flinching from any of it.
Woni Spotts is also the author of Letters From Everywhere and has been inducted into the Hidden History Museum in Los Angeles.
