Pioneers of Tyrolean Aviation: Sarlay, Pernter and Silberer and the First Scientific Balloon Flight of the "Tirol" (1888)

Innsbruck, Austria: On 26 September 1888, the balloon "Tirol" took off from the gasworks square in Innsbruck on one of the early scientific high-altitude flights in the Alpine region. The flight took place under typical foehn conditions and primarily served to investigate air currents, temperature, and humidity at higher altitudes.

The gondola crew consisted of three outstanding personalities who made pioneering contributions in different ways:

Captain Victor Silberer from Vienna, an experienced aeronaut and one of the most important promoters of Austrian ballooning. As a pilot and publisher of the Wiener Luftschiffer-Zeitung, he brought practical aeronautical expertise and leadership to the enterprise.

Prof. Josef Maria Pernter, meteorologist at the Imperial-Royal Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics in Vienna, was responsible for the scientific observations. Pernter was one of the leading figures in the emerging field of aerology (upper-air meteorology). He conducted systematic measurements during the flight and later played a key role in establishing balloon flights as a serious scientific tool.

Senior Official Philipp Sarlay (later Court Councillor), an official of the Imperial-Royal Telegraph Administration in Innsbruck, was responsible for the technical and logistical organization. He oversaw the complex gas filling of the balloon with town gas from the Innsbruck gasworks and ensured a functioning telegraph connection so that the collected data could be transmitted quickly.

While Victor Silberer provided the aeronautical know-how and leadership, and Josef Maria Pernter ensured the scientific evaluation, it was largely thanks to Philipp Sarlay that the necessary technical infrastructure for such a demanding flight in the Alps was available at all. The successful collaboration of these three pioneers made the flight of the "Tirol" a prime example of interdisciplinary cooperation in the late 19th century.

In 1889, Prof. Josef Maria Pernter acknowledged Philipp Sarlay's contribution, highlighting his tireless efforts in preparing scientific high-altitude flights.

The balloon flight of the "Tirol" on 26 September 1888 is considered an important milestone in early Tyrolean aviation and Alpine high-altitude research. It impressively demonstrated how new knowledge about the free atmosphere could be gained through the interplay of practical aeronautics, meteorological science, and technical organization.
