Didier Ahadsi: Publication on One of the Most Significant Collections of Erotic Sculptures by the African Artist in Preparation
Schwaz, Austria, 14 April 2026 - The occasion for this announcement is a planned publication dedicated to the work of the Togolese artist Didier Ahadsi, with a particular focus on his exploration of corporeality, spirituality, and social themes.Didier Ahadsi is among the internationally exhibited sculptors of West Africa. Born in 1970 in Vogan (Togo) and a member of the Ewe ethnic group, he developed his artistic practice from his work as a car body repairer and welder. Using recycled metal parts, he creates sculptures that reflect scenes of everyday life as well as complex social and cultural contexts.
A central aspect of his work is the depiction of the human body and eroticism. These works are often direct, at times provocative, and are situated within the context of African traditions, Voodoo-inspired spirituality, and contemporary realities. They offer a nuanced perspective on themes such as intimacy, social relationships, power structures, and cultural taboos.
Part of one of the largest known collections of erotic figures by Didier Ahadsi, comprising over 50 pieces, is owned by ethnologist, photographer, renowned author and journalist, and founder of the Museum of Peoples (Museum der Völker), Prof. Gert Chesi - also recognized as a significant collector of African art - as well as marketing strategist, investor, and Africa specialist Alexander Sarlay, who is also recognized as a dedicated collector and supporter of contemporary African art.
This collection forms a solid foundation for the planned publication and documents key aspects of Ahadsi's artistic development. It illustrates how the artist translates traditional influences, personal experiences, and contemporary social issues into a distinctive visual language.
Art at the Intersection of Tradition and the Present
Ahadsi's works operate between craftsmanship and conceptual depth. Through the use of recycled materials and the deliberate portrayal of social realities, his sculptures achieve both aesthetic and intellectual significance.
The planned publication aims to present these aspects comprehensively for the first time and to make them accessible to a broader professional audience.
