Stephan Balkenhol New Bronze Sculptures 2026 - Man in a White Shirt and Black Pants - Venus | FRANK FLUEGEL GALERIE
Karlsruhe, Nuremberg, Kitzbuehel, April 2026German sculptor Stephan Balkenhol unveiled two new bronze sculptures in April 2026.
The sculptures are titled "Man in a White Shirt and Black Pants 2026" and "Venus 2026." Both are 68 cm tall and were produced in an edition of 30. The Stephan Balkonhol sculptures are both available for sale at FRANK FLUEGEL GALERIE. The sculptures can bee seen from April 8th 2026 till January 20th 2027.
"Man in a White Shirt and Black Pants 2026" is a hand-painted bronze sculpture that is signed and numbered on the base. Venus is, of course, also signed. While one sculpture depicts the man in black pants and a white shirt typical of Balkenhol-this time with his hands folded-the second bronze depicts a young woman in a white skirt and black blouse. The two works can be displayed as a pair, with the contrast between the black and white clothing particularly striking.
Stephan Balkenhol is one of the most significant contemporary German sculptors. He is known for his figures carved from tree trunks and painted in color, which are often interpreted as representations of "everyman." Stephan Balkenhol will turn 70 in 2027.
Stephan Balkenhol sculptures are also on display at the current Art Cologne Palma de Mallorca Fair in April 2026.
The human figure is at the center of Stephan Balkenhol's work. Mostly they are alone, but occasionally they are also accompanied by animals or architectural elements. The figures we encounter in his roughly hewn and painted wood or bronze sculptures are anonymous, reserved, even emotionless. A man in black pants and a white shirt is chained to a sphere that, upon closer inspection, represents a globe. A distorted image, the imagination? Balkenhol captures unassuming moments. The people he depicts are completely absorbed in themselves. They appear relaxed, unbiased, detached. Although their gaze is directed at us, it often seems empty. This reinforces their enigmatic mystery. When Balkenhol studied at the Hamburg University of Fine Arts under Ulrich Rückriem and Sigmar Polke, his figurative compositions stood in contrast to the prevailing abstract and conceptual art. His works are not portraits in the concrete sense: they neither depict a specific person nor are they signs or symbols for people.
Balkenhol's use of wood, bronze, and traditional carving methods creates a direct, tactile connection between the viewer and the figure. His style, often described as a return to figurative sculpture in contemporary art, is known for its raw, almost unfinished texture. This rawness enhances the sense of the figure's humanity. Despite his constrained posture, the man remains relatable, imperfect, and, in his quiet endurance, very much alive.
Stephan Balkenhol has had numerous exhibitions in Germany and Europe. The sculpture "Teddy Bear" was presented at the Frank Fluegel Gallery as early as 2025.
The sculptures are cast in bronze, an alloy of copper and other metals (particularly tin) that has been used since antiquity. It is an ideal metal for high-quality art castings that will endure for thousands of years.
