Free Live Jazz in April: The Jazz Sanctuary Announces Four Concerts in Greater Philadelphia

Performances scheduled in Buckingham, Philadelphia, Jenkintown and Bryn Mawr

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania - April 8, 2026 - Philadelphia's most distinctive performing arts nonprofit, The Jazz Sanctuary, now in its 15th year, continues its musical mission this April with four free, live jazz concerts across the Greater Philadelphia region.

Traditionally, April is Jazz Appreciation Month -- and for The Jazz Sanctuary founder and executive director Alan Segal, the celebration goes beyond a single designation on the calendar.

"April begins Jazz Appreciation Month, and I say, let's celebrate it every single day," said Segal.

Jazz Appreciation Month was created by the Smithsonian in 2001 to recognize and celebrate the extraordinary heritage and history of jazz throughout April.

Hot on the heels of a record-breaking fundraising campaign that exceeded all goals, The Jazz Sanctuary continues to build momentum toward its milestone 1,000th concert, offering audiences opportunities to experience live jazz at no cost in churches and community spaces throughout the region.

Segal, who continues to recover from a recent injury, shared that his return to performing remains a strong personal motivation.

"My health is on the way up -- not in a straight line, but moving in the right direction," he said. "I really miss playing. I miss the audiences, my friends, and my group -- I miss turning to the right and seeing Leon, and to the left and seeing Randy."

The April performance schedule for The Jazz Sanctuary includes:
• Thursday, April 9 - 7:30 p.m.- Trinity Episcopal Church, Routes 202 & 413, Buckingham, PA 18912 -An evening of the always popular "Jazz & Joe" with coffee, treats, and live music from featuring The Jazz Sanctuary Quintet: James Dell'Orefice (piano), Eddie Etkins (saxophone), Leon Jordan Sr. (drums), Randy Sutin (vibes/percussion), with Rob Cochran filling in on bass for Alan Segal.

• Thursday, April 23 - 7:30 p.m. - Gloria Dei (Old Swedes') Episcopal Church, 8 Christian St., Philadelphia, PA 19147 - An evening of "Jazz & Joe" featuring The Jazz Sanctuary Quintet, with Rob Cochran filling in on base for Alan Segal.

• Sunday, April 26 -- 4 p.m. -- Grace Presbyterian Church, 444 York Rd., Jenkintown, PA 19046 -- "Jazz & Joe" featuring The Jazz Sanctuary Quintet: James Dell'Orefice (piano), Eddie Etkins (saxophone), Grant MacAvoy (drums), Randy Sutin (vibes/percussion), and Bruce Kaminsky (bass).

• Wednesday, April 29 --7 p.m. -- Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church, 625 Montgomery Ave., Bryn Mawr, PA 19010 - A special evening of "Jazz & Joe" featuring The Jazz Sanctuary Quintet, with Rob Cochran filling in on bass for Alan Segal, joined by guest vocalist Paula Johns.

One highlight of the April schedule is a performance at a new venue for the organization.

"We're excited to introduce a brand-new location at Grace Presbyterian Church and invite everyone to come out and experience it with us," Segal added.

Each performance features members of The Jazz Sanctuary ensemble and reflects the organization's ongoing commitment to accessibility, community engagement, and the shared experience of live music.

"I'm looking forward to seeing everyone again, and to simply saying hello," Segal said.

All concerts are free and open to the public.
