“Spectators will think the track’s on fire on Sunday 18th May.”

So said Ray Smith, PR Manager for Knockhill Racing Circuit, Scotland’s National Motorsport Centre, when speaking about the annual visit to Scotland of the amazing POWERSLIDE LIVE: EUROPEAN DRIFT CHAMPIONSHIP (EDC), the most sideways and spectacular motorsport activity in the world.

The ‘sport’ of drifting originated in Japan and quickly gained a massive fan base and cult status, which hugely accelerated when the top cars and drivers starred in a Hollywood movie entitled “The Fast and the Furious” which centred around the colourful, tyre smoking cars and starred action man actor Vin Diesel. A second, follow up film, “Tokyo Drift” greatly helped to capture the imagination of fans and a great display of action is expected when the high powered cars hit the Knockhill track.

The Scottish public will have the opportunity to view the breathtaking sight of seeing high powered cars, deliberately being thrown into lurid broadside slides, at speeds reaching 110mph, whilst approaching a series of Knockhill’s trickiest bends!!

Added Mr Smith, “Our first corner – SEAT Curve – is well known in the world of motorsport as one of the most daunting and hair-raising, blind downhill bends of any circuit in the World and tests the skill and bravery of drivers to the limit, under normal conditions, but these guys really are in a league of their own – totally crazy, but superb with it.”

For the spectator, it is an exciting and thrilling viewing experience, with door to door performances, near misses, high speeds, unbelievable angles of drift and plenty of tyre smoke. Combine this with glamorously decorated professional cars and you have a motorsport event for all the family.

Entrants are judged on speed, angle of attack, execution and style, rather than conventional racing, whereby the winner is usually the one which passes the finish line first.

Drivers include the appropriately named, Mark Luney from Ireland, currently holding 3rd place in a Championship which visits Silverstone Circuit, Donington Park Circuit, Santa Pod Raceway and the Poznan Racing Circuit in Poland.

Drift cars are normally mid-sized, rear wheel drive sports cars and the majority of the field is made up of Japanese manufactured cars, due to the sport being born in Japan. However, with drifting exploding worldwide, it is becoming more popular for American and European built cars to be used as a base model for a drift car.

Arriving at Knockhill, leading the ‘EDC’ is Brett Castle, in his formidable Nissan Skyline, followed by Ben Broke Smith at the wheel of his unmissable Nissan.

Fans and autograph hunters may want to track down former ‘Boyzone’ member, Shane Lynch, who has made the switch from racing in the British GT Championship, to sliding his Nissan Skyline around the ‘EDC’ scene.

Running alongside the ‘EDC’ is the ‘TIME ATTACK SERIES’, with over 100 seriously tuned and modified cars, especially Japanese marques, battling it out to see just who is the quickest on the Circuit.

‘TIME ATTACK’ competitors will drive hard against the clock, to set the quickest lap time.

By joining forces, these two high powered events provide a full-on action packed day of excitement, watching the UK’s best tuned cars and Europe’s finest drift drivers.

The event will run from 9am until 5pm.
Admission: Adults - £15, Concessions (8-16 yrs/OAP/Disabled) - £8, Under 8’s – Free. Visit www.knockhill.com for ticket and event information.
