Freedom on two wheels: The 'BMW Mountain Days' in Zell am See-Kaprun

Many kilometres of paths through lush green valleys, along the shores of Lake Zell or across Alpine pastures: the network of routes available in Zell am See-Kaprun is a delight not just for walkers and cyclists. Uncounted motorcyclists also travel to Pinzgau year after year to ride their bikes along roads surfaced with asphalt and through the picturesque countryside. Up until now, they had to organize their tours privately. This spring, however, the 'BMW Mountain Days' offer them an opportunity to get together with many kindred spirits from all over Europe to enjoy that feeling of freedom on two wheels to the full in company.

From 22nd to 25th May Zell am See and Kaprun invite to this first time occasion. 'The region is just perfect for such an event', says Markus Kaufmann, one of the organizers and a motorbike dealer at the Kaprun BMW car showroom of that same name. It is its central location right in the middle of Europe that makes the region so interesting: bikers from Germany, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Italy, Croatia, Slovenia, and Switzerland can all get there quite quickly and easily. And once the international guests have gathered there, they can start on trips to Carinthia, East Tyrol, and many further destinations in the vicinity. There will always be lots of suitable routes to choose from!

It is the 'BMW Mountain Days' that make all this possible. From Thursday, 22nd May, there will be daily trips of about four hours each starting at half past eight in the morning and led by experienced tour guides who take care of planning the routes. More than half a dozen different routes are on the programme. The participants will be able to fully concentrate on riding their bikes and enjoying the idyllic countryside. When the pilots return to their starting point on the L 543 near the premises of BMW Kaufmann in the afternoon, there will still be enough time to revel in all the other attractions of the 'BMW Mountain Days' - such as the spectacular Enduropark, the technology and tuning fair 'The World of BMW Motorbikes' on about 20,000 square metres of exhibition space, and the Streetbike Freestyle Show with Aleš Polák. And of course, there will be lots of music, too: the tunes of some local bands will be heard in Kaprun as well as the flair of Dixie and jazz music from New Orleans. For all those who would like to get know the traditions of the region a little better, the 'Pinzgau Party Mile' is the place to go. All the local clubs and associations are presenting themselves there with music, dance, and lots of culinary delights.

The secret highlight of the 'BMW Mountain Days' is sure to cause a tingling sensation in the tummies of all riders: on Friday, 23rd May, at half past nine on the morning, they all start on a trip up to Austria's highest mountain. The route leads along the biking eldorado of Grossglockner pass up to Bikers' Point on Edelweißspitze, more than 2,500 metres above sea level.

Before the bikers are once again scattered to the four winds on Sunday, 25th May, the vicar of Kaprun, Toni Fersterer, will provide them with spiritual support for their way: he is going to hold an open-air service to give them his blessings. And their bikes won't be forgotten there either. The 'BMW Mountain Days' - a really heavenly delight!

The holiday region of Zell am See-Kaprun with its 14,000 beds and two million overnight stays per year is one of the most important holiday destinations in Austria. The beautiful flora and fauna in the Alpine panorama and Lake Zell guarantee relaxation and well-being. Golfing, hiking, and bathing are at the focus for the summer time programme, but visitors can choose from more than 40 other activities as well. During the cold season, fun on skis and boards make sure that there is no dull moment. Skiers can comfortably reach the 136 kilometres of slopes covered with powder snow by one of the 56 lifts. Snowboarders enjoy the perfect conditions of the Snowpark on the 2,600-metre-high glacier plateau. Even in the summer you can swish down the slopes here. And family-friendliness is a top priority in Zell am See and Kaprun. For this reason, the region has already received various awards.

Zell am See-Kaprun: dashing through deep powder snow

They seem surprised, perhaps even a little intimidated at first when Sebastian Kaufmann gets out his microphone. They have met in the cable car of the trassXpress, a state-of-the-art facility taking visitors up to Schmittenhöhe. Together with Sabine and Frank, she has come to the region from Braunshardt in Germany to spend her holidays on
Tourism experts are looking forward to the 'castlecamp' at Kaprun from 13th Sept …
It is general practice among the visitors of a 'barcamp' to take home a sticker once the 'unconference' has finished. That way, the participants want to say, 'I was in on that.' The idea is not really new. For decades, travellers have collected that kind of souvenirs of their holiday destinations and stuck them to their suitcases. It's the 'barcamps' themselves that are new. They have only been organized for
Zell am See-Kaprun invite to an 'unconference' at the castle
Anyone who has ever been in the audience of a large conference, congress, or seminar, maybe even for several days in a row, knows that phenomenon only too well: there are set schedules to be followed, hours of talks and lots of useless information to be listened to. And the only topic you are really interested in is usually placed right at the bottom of the agenda. By the time
