castlecamp 2.0: Kaprun hosts an unconference on e-tourism

The owner of the wellness hotel Übergossene Alm in Austrian Dienten is one of the trailblazers in the hotel industry. But when it comes to social media Burgschwaiger is open to new input, just like the other 100 participants who followed the invitation of Rainer Edlinger, organizer of the barcamp at Kaprun Castle and responsible for the field of 'Social Media' in the marketing of the holiday destination of Zell am See-Kaprun. Already for the second time the prominent landmark of Kaprun was the venue of an event which offered the opportunity to discuss the online future of tourism in general and the implementation of communication concepts and technical solutions in particular.

A barcamp boasts unique opportunities to share knowledge. At brainstorming sessions, participants are at the same level and can appreciate this situation to exchange personal experiences, develop new ideas, form and maintain networks. There are no determined roles; the participants are not divided in speakers and audience. Instead, this open unconference is meant to foster the exchange of ideas and perceptions among experts. After taking place in 2008 and 2009, the castlecamp has already made a name for itself among e-tourism experts. Participants came from Austria, Germany, Italy, and Switzerland and put up with a journey of several hundreds of kilometres to be able to contribute their share of generating new ideas and establish contact with the smartest heads of the industry in this unique creative pool. Tourism or marketing experts, people working in PR or online publishing - they all were able to gather a large variety of stimuli for their daily work. 'I have learned many new things, found inspiration and did business', said Uwe Frers, managing director of TripsByTips GmbH in Berlin. Martin Schober, responsible for Internet strategies at Österreich Werbung was full of praise, too: 'Within a mere two years, Zell am See-Kaprun has become a pioneer among the tourism destinations of Europe in this field.'

According to the current situation and their interests, the participants of the castlecamp decided on the topics on the morning of the first event day. Since it is of major importance to know what is said about one's own products or services on the social media sites to be able to take adequate measures, tourism experts focussed on 'Social Media Monitoring' this year. Under the heading of 'Web Video Marketing', the participants analysed the right combination of authenticity and marketing measures. In addition, the potential of Facebook fan pages, crisis communication in Web 2.0, and many other topics were on the agenda, written down on a flip chart, castelcamp's so-called 'paper wiki'. 'The interest in our event is huge. And we are able to get lots of creative input for our region and new ideas and approaches for communication', said organizer Rainer Edlinger.
