New European Standard for Chemical Toys (Sets) Other Than Experimental Sets
Baar (February 2, 2026) - SGS, the world's leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published SafeGuardS 008.26, summarizing the European Committee for Standardization's (CEN) latest version of the standard for substances and mixtures used in chemical toys (sets) other than experimental sets.EN 71-5:2025 was issued in December 2025 and specifies the requirements and test methods used for the following chemicals:
• Those classified as dangerous under Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 'Classification, labeling and packaging of substances and mixtures (CLP Regulation)
• Those for which excessive amounts could be harmful to children and which are not classified as dangerous under the CLP Regulation
• Other chemical substances and mixtures supplied with the chemical toy
The new EN 71-5:2025 standard will gain national status by June 2026, replacing conflicting national standards. Harmonization under Directive 2009/48/EC on toy safety is expected upon official acceptance by the European Commission and publication in the Official Journal of the EU (OJEU).
SGS experts publish SafeGuardS to keep stakeholders informed about regulatory changes that could impact their business. SafeGuardS 008.26 includes a helpful table with key changes in EN 71-5:2025 compared with EN 71-5:2015.
