For Allergy Sufferers Access to Timely Airborne Pollen Information Remains an Unmet Need

02-07-2017 11:27 AM CET | Health & Medicine

Press release from: Applied Market Data

(Nashua, NH) – Conditions related to upper respiratory sensitivities to airborne environmental allergens have been growing at a rapid pace over the last ten years. As with diabetes, another ailment where prevalence is rising globally, the reasons behind the increase are not yet fully understood. Several companies are attempting to address the unmet need of allergy sufferers for a method to detect and even measure the levels of airborne allergens in a local setting.

While pollen monitors have been used in specific geographic locations for many years, these legacy measuring systems are large, heavy and fixed. The installations are typically owned and operated by academic institutions often in partnership with government and/or private health care entities. They generate and make available detailed reports and data on pollen counts for the immediate geographic area, which has limited utility for allergy patients who do not reside in close proximity to the monitor.

A number of companies and private research organizations have been investigating ways to provide analysis and information on allergens in a smaller form factor – one that can be used, e.g., in a residential setting. The current generation of these reduced-size devices consist of products that measure and report on a number of environmental parameters including particulates, but have limited capabilities to measure airborne pollen beyond indirect qualitative values.

Work on realizing a truly portable, residential wall-mountable or even wearable pollen monitor is progressing with several products available via web sites. And while these devices cannot provide the same degree of detail or allergen discrimination as the legacy, stationary-type systems, their evolutionary path is inspiring academics and entrepreneurs to investigate ongoing improvements through detection technology minimization and system integration.

As air quality continues to deteriorate, particularly in urban areas around the globe, the desire of consumers for technology that can display information on what’s in the air in their immediate vicinity will continue to grow. By removing the inherent limitations of legacy installations, this evolving class of small form factor pollen monitors has the potential to provide market participants as well as patients and caregivers with new opportunities.

The initiatives and device advances that are shaping the pollen monitoring market and the innovations that are pacing the evolution of small form factor devices are detailed in a new and comprehensive report researched and prepared by Applied Market Data. Small Form Factor Pollen Monitors: Technologies, Devices, Markets and Opportunities analyzes the key development and commercialization factors that form the foundation of monitors capable of providing allergy patients with localized information on environmental allergens. It consists of in-depth analyses, monitor descriptions, business factors and market sector profiles.
