Headline: ICHRRF Condemns Female Genital Mutilation Worldwide, Calls for Courageous Action Internationally

[Washington D.C.] - The International Commission for Human Rights and Religious Freedom (ICHRRF) has issued a strong condemnation of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), stressing that there is no medical or evidence-based justification for the practice anywhere in the world. Often carried out in silence, FGM is sustained by cultural norms, religious edicts, social pressure, and entrenched expectations. There are estimated 230 million victims and survivors of this abominable cultural and religious practice, not just in Africa and Asia but also in Europe and North America.

At its Monthly Speaking Up Series Oration on November 23, 2025, human rights expert Sanjaya Sarpong-KumanKumah addressed "The Persistence of Female Genital Mutilation in Ghana: A Deeply Ingrained Cultural Practice". Sarpong-KumanKumah stressed that ending FGM requires a combination of legislation, education, and community engagement.

"Ghana can become a nation where no girl is ever cut in the name of custom, where her worth is recognized not for her pain but for her power, completeness, and right to live freely," said Sarpong-KumanKumah.

He called on survivors to share their stories and communities to prioritize health, dignity, and human rights over harmful traditions. Though the focus of his presentation was on Ghana only, there is growing realization that the practice is more widespread. The ensuing discussion highlighted the urgent need to put an immediate end to this deeply scarring and harmful practice forced upon the girl-child instead of tolerating it or condoning it based on cultural issues. Not only are there medical sequelae, but also mental health problems in later life including post-traumatic stress disorder, depression and impaired sexual and reproductive consequences

The ICHRRF emphasizes that the fight against FGM is multi-dimensional and involves a muti-pronged approach. This includes changing laws and also fostering candid and genuine dialogue, compassion for the survivors, tolerance, and brave conversations that challenge deeply rooted social, cultural and religious norms. This issue can no longer be swept under the carpet owing to political correctness.
