IM Houston Receives Grant from Texas Veterans Commission

HOUSTON - IM Houston (formerly Interfaith Ministries for Greater Houston) is pleased to announce that it has received a $7,500 Texas Bar Foundation grant to support its Refugee Legal Services program, strengthening the legal guidance and documentation assistance available to refugees who are rebuilding their lives in the Greater Houston area. All clients served have legal status.

For thousands of families who arrived in Houston seeking safety, stability, and the chance to begin again, clear and accurate legal guidance is often the first lifeline they receive. The Texas Bar Foundation grant will help IM Houston provide refugees with reliable legal information, support with essential filings, and the resources needed to navigate the earliest, and often most overwhelming, steps of resettlement.

Legal services are a cornerstone of IM Houston's comprehensive Refugee Services network, which surrounds newcomers with the support they need to regain footing and move forward. The program includes cultural orientation, education connections, medical coordination, transportation assistance, and employment support, each one helping families find their place in a new community.

In the most recent fiscal year, IM Houston served more than 9,600 refugee clients. Nearly 2,000 individuals secured employment, taking first steps toward independence and long-term stability. Families received rental assistance, education and employment support, food and utility assistance, and access to specialized programming for women and youth, which act as safe spaces where confidence grows, friendships form, and healing begins.

"Legal services are an important resource for families on the path to citizenship," said Sheroo Mukhtiar, president and CEO of IM Houston. "Behind every case file is a parent striving to keep their children safe, an individual who left everything they know to begin a new life, or a family hoping to connect with community. We are grateful to the Texas Bar Foundation for supporting this vital work and helping ensure that refugees in our community have the resources they need to move forward with security and dignity."

Since its inception in 1965, the Texas Bar Foundation has awarded more than $30 million in grants to law-related programs. Supported by members of the State Bar of Texas, the Texas Bar Foundation is the nation's largest charitably-funded bar foundation.
