COSCOM and Kiel University of Applied Sciences start a partnership

From the winter semester 2025/26, Kiel University of Applied Sciences will be offering new practical exercises for students in cooperation with COSCOM Computer GmbH. Prof. Dr. Henning Strau?, Managing Director of the Institute of Production Engineering and CIM Technology Transfer and Head of the Smart Factory and Shopfloor IT working group, will actively apply the software modules of the COSCOM ECO system in teaching and research cases.

Embedded in the shopfloor IT, the COSCOM ECO system automates tool management for CNC machines: Machining companies such as Schoeller-Bleckmann Precision Technology, SK Technology and SMS Group are already benefiting and saving their time and effort with COSCOM's digitalization solutions.

What is COSCOM ECO-System?

COSCOM software products and process solutions work everywhere in the PLM, CAD/CAM and manufacturing process and contribute to improved efficiency on the way to the Smart Factory and Industry 4.0. The COSCOM ECO system includes various store floor software modules that can be used separately or built on top of each other. One popular module is ToolDIRECTOR VM for tool management. All relevant tool data can be stored digitally here.
Connections to other programs are also possible via an API.

The advantages of the innovation partnership

The system is now intended to provide practical experience for mechanical engineering students attending courses such as Machine Tools and CAM and Digital Factory Techniques led by Prof. Dr. Henning Strau?.

This involves the provision of several software modules of the COSCOM ECO system. Users from the university will receive specialist training from COSCOM so that they can configure and operate the system themselves. They are given access to the production data from an SQL database and can also use it for other processes.

This innovation partnership brings the following benefits for students:
- They learn about the digital workflow of a CNC specialist. This includes not only the execution of a production job, but also successive jobs including tool exchange.
- Kiel University of Applied Sciences has CNC machines from the manufacturers GROB, Georg Fischer, Chiron and DMG Mori. Some of these are connected to the modules of the COSCOM ECO system.
- COSCOM can refer its customers who have specific research cases to the University of Applied Sciences. This gives students direct access to the real working world in the field of machining technology.

Managing Director Christian Erlinger explains the advantages for COSCOM as follows: "We are helping to ensure that future specialists are well prepared when they start their careers. In addition, it is also interesting for us to establish the COSCOM brand in the northern German region. Our customers now have the opportunity to gain access to a research facility."

Kiel University of Applied Sciences will be renamed Kiel University of Applied Sciences (HAW Kiel) on November 1, 2025.
