Festival Art & Books: A Gateway to Enjoyable and Accessible Tolkien Book Collecting
There has recently been a news story going around about a jacketless first edition of the hobbit selling at auction for £43,000, a record price for a 1st edition without a dust jacket. Having a dust jacket that is in good condition is key to the value of any modern rare book. One with a fine, unrestored dust jacket is now worth about £300,000. The last one sold two years ago for £220,000. Finding one of these in grandmother's attic would be a life-changer. Not that likely, but not totally impossible either. The Tolkien films, with more to come, has made Professor Tolkien's masterpieces a global phenomena including a growing collectors market for all budgets. We have produced a podcast that explains why we think Professor Tolkien continues to span the generations. https://castbox.fm/app/castbox/player/id1209853/id485657519 At Festival Art & Books (FAB), we believe that collecting J.R.R. Tolkien's books is not only a rewarding hobby but opportunity to invest and grow your money unlike any other opportunity. Rare books have outpaced all other types of investments including property and stocks. Whether you're a lifelong fan or new to the world of Tolkien, there are opportunities to build a collection that brings deep satisfaction and potential value over time.
While it's true that certain rare editions, such as a first edition The Hobbit with its original dust jacket, have commanded impressive prices and mostly inaccessible to average people, the price of newer printings and editions are growing even faster. The vast majority of Tolkien's works are available at more affordable prices, but condition is the most important factor, not just edition. Newer editions offer a balance between affordability and collectability, often appreciating in value as they become scarcer with increasing demand.
Collecting Tolkien books is more than an investment-it's a journey through the rich tapestry of Middle-earth fantasy. Moreover, as interest in Tolkien's works continues to thrive through films, television adaptations, and a dedicated global fan base, the demand for well-preserved editions seems limitless.
At FAB, we are committed to guiding both new and seasoned collectors in finding editions that suit their interests and budgets. Our extensive experience and passion for Tolkien's works ensure that you receive expert advice and access to a curated selection of books that can enhance your collection and enjoyment.
Explore the curated selection at www.festivalartandbooks.com and begin your Tolkien collecting journey today.

Mark started in the Tolkien Rare Book business in January 2001. As time went we became more and more specialized and began primarily dealing in more expensive Tolkien rare books and memorabilia. Mark very quickly began dealing in millions of pounds worth of rare Tolkien items: books, art and memorabilia. He was dealing with the most valuable and rarest pieces from the beginning, all records prices at the time. He is still breaking records as first editions become more valuable.
