No scandal seems big enough: It gets even bolder - ÖDP criticizes Rhine water discharge

(Würzburg) - Gigantism has always been the order of the day in open-cast lignite mining: the biggest excavators are digging huge holes in the landscape. In Garzweiler in North Rhine-Westphalia, such huge environmental destruction will in future be coupled with just as much stupidity, resulting in a genuine and health-threatening environmental atrocity. River water contaminated with toxic eternal chemicals is to be pumped over 45 kilometers from Dormagen into the former mine in order to turn coal pits into flourishing recreational landscapes. "Lake Hambach has no real outlet," comments Prof. Dr. Herbert Einsiedler, a member of the federal executive board of the Ecological Democratic Party (ÖDP - Die Naturschutzpartei), on this mammoth project by RWE: "PFAS are accumulating in it. This endangers nature and all people who want to live or recreate there - a scandal!"

The poison comes from the chemical plants on the Rhine. According to a Greenpeace sample, the water is also contaminated. According to its own website, energy giant RWE nevertheless considers the "renaturation project" to be "indispensable" and reinterprets the dangerous project as "nature conservation". However, the ÖDP is already criticizing the discharge of the poison at the Leverkusen Chemical Park and is calling for a "revision of the concept of flooding the open-cast mine, taking into account climate change and its effects on the water flow of the Rhine" as well as "pre-clarification and purification of the river water before it is discharged into the pipes to Garzweiler". Einsiedler recalls that a chemical accident in 2021 caused deaths and environmental damage: "It is intolerable that highly hazardous substances continue to enter the river."
