Osaretin, Senator Blair, and Kayitana Champion US-Africa AI

In a compelling discussion on CNBC Africa, three visionary figures-Osaretin Agbonavbare, Robert Blair, and Pierre Kayitana-offered powerful insights into the growing intersection of artificial intelligence (AI), drone technology, and global cooperation. The conversation follows the recent executive order by former U.S. President Donald Trump to assert America's dominance in AI and drone industries, with implications resonating far beyond U.S. borders-especially into Africa.

AI as a Global Equalizer: Osaretin Agbonavbare's Perspective

Osaretin Agbonavbare, a Nigerian-born human-computer interaction expert and AI advocate, spoke from Houston, Texas, about the significance of America's strategic push into AI. "This is a pivotal moment," Agbonavbare remarked, applauding the action plan introduced by President Trump. "For years, AI development was led by private firms. Now, we're seeing top-level governance stepping in to shape the future."

Agbonavbare emphasized the opportunity this opens for Africa, citing the continent's youthful population and existing tech incubators in countries like Nigeria, Kenya, and South Africa. "Africa cannot afford to be a bystander," he urged. "Our leaders must look at the U.S. and EU's investments-totaling over $150 billion-and develop context-specific AI policies that reflect our languages, cultures, and societal needs."

With a strong background in education technology, Agbonavbare also pointed out the need for AI to boost educational systems and prepare Africa's youth for the fourth industrial revolution. His award-winning AI-Driven Personalized Learning Ecosystem (APLE) is one such innovation that has already earned him the 2024 Texas Innovator in EdTech Award.

Drone Technology in Agriculture: Senator Robert Blair's Mission

Joining the conversation was Idaho Senator Robert Blair, a fourth-generation farmer and one of the earliest U.S. adopters of drone technology in agriculture. Blair highlighted the importance of drones in achieving what he calls "surgical agriculture"-precision farming that optimizes the use of water, fertilizer, and pesticides while improving sustainability.

Senator Blair also touched on the policy barriers that have long delayed drone innovation. "We've come a long way since petitioning the FAA in 2008. The new policy directions under the Trump administration are clearing the path for drones to be a mainstream tool in American farming," he said.

Importantly, Blair sees Africa not just as a market, but a manufacturing partner. He envisions a future where "Rwandan-made or Kenyan-made drones fill the vacuum left by Chinese drones, which are increasingly restricted in U.S. government agencies." His recent participation in the AI Conference Nairobi 2024 reflects his belief in strengthening U.S.-Africa drone cooperation.

Pierre Kayitana: Rwanda's Drone and AI Vanguard

Rwandan tech leader Pierre Kayitana, General Manager at Zipline Rwanda, brought his frontline experience to the discussion. Under his leadership, Zipline has pioneered autonomous drone delivery of medical supplies across Rwanda, including critical services like blood and malaria medication distribution.

Kayitana argued that AI and drone technologies are already reshaping public health in Africa. "We've proven that drones save lives," he said. "Now, the next step is scaling and regional integration. AI must be designed for African realities-health data, languages, infrastructure limitations."

As a former head of the Rwanda Cinema Center and telecommunications executive, Kayitana bridges the worlds of media, tech, and governance. He also called for AI education across Africa, echoing Agbonavbare's call for digital inclusion and skill-building among youth. "We need to develop local solutions with global standards," he concluded.

A Shared Vision for Africa-US Tech Synergy

All three leaders emphasized that Africa is not merely a beneficiary of Western tech but a proactive partner. Whether it's drone manufacturing in East Africa, AI policy adaptation, or digital education, the message was clear: a new era of cooperation is possible-one built on mutual investments, ethical innovation, and inclusive growth.

As the U.S. aims for global AI leadership, it appears Africa could be its strongest collaborator-and beneficiary-if the right strategies, investments, and voices like Agbonavbare, Blair, and Kayitana continue to shape the conversation.
