Posted on March 24th, the podcast of Chapter 2 “Comfort in a Stranger’s Kiss” introduces the heroine of the epic fantasy, Miranda. With this female character, Falbe explores the vulnerabilities and hardships that have frequently troubled women through the ages. In this chapter, Miranda suffers through life as an abused slave who feels powerless to properly protect her children. Female characters in most fantasy novels trend toward the innocent and privileged, but Falbe created a harsher background for Miranda’s character in order to set up her motivations for pursuing freedom and fighting evil forces. The heroine’s later chance for love is also that much more appreciated because of her difficult youth.

The podcast of this portion of the fantasy novel depicts Miranda under pressure from not only her harsh master but also the looming crisis of a foreign invasion of a conquering horde. She joins the mass of refugees flooding into a nearby fortress, but she derives no sense of security from this action. Swiftly, she realizes that she must to do something to take control of her life if she is going to save herself and her children.
