Publicity often begins with a campaign; this can include press kits, interviews, trailers, and more, but the main goal is clear: get people talking. True publicity starts there. "Interviews on podcasts, radio, TV, and print help truly motivated book readers to buy a book. If they like an author interview, they'll read the synopsis, check out the reviews, and then buy the book. If they like it, those book buyers become advocates themselves and tell their friends, family, and associates," Lorenz says. "For authors, there are tons of resources out there for publicity. Hiring agents, using social media, and traditional marketing are just some first steps."
Some noteworthy examples Lorenz highlights include British spy author Mick Herron, who got his big break through a raving review on public radio, Dan Brown, who changed the focus of his publicity by painting a new image of himself, and Rachel Ray, who used a radio show promoting her cookbooks to launch her tv career. Scott Lorenz also recalls a personal example: Jared Knott, whose work received little attention until Lorenz's company pushed him into the limelight through press kits, a book trailer, and dozens of interviews.
