Internal fixation devices are used for reduction or realignment of fractured bones. The devices form an integral part of the orthopaedics market in healthcare due to the large global demand annually. The segment comprises of a variety of devices such as screws, plates, nails or rods and wires used to fix fractures and fragmented bone tissue in adults and children. Internal fixation is an orthopaedic surgical procedure for implanting a metal device to correct structural form to shattered bone tissues. Through the last two decades, companies have developed specialized internal fixation devices and sets for typical fractures along with dedicated devices that are specifically contoured to different body parts such as hand, wrists, feet, tibia and fibula, cranio-maxillofacial and others. Internal fixation procedures are of two types namely, Open Reduction Internal Fixation (ORIF) and Closed Reduction Internal Fixation (CRIF). Open reduction refers to setting of fractured bones through an open surgery, whereas closed reduction refers to resetting of bones without open surgery. It is an acceptable alternative in some fractures in children; however the procedure is not as common as open surgery. Internal fixation reduces incidence of malunion and non-union of broken bones. Wires are used to thread or suture bones together again and pins hold bones that are too small to be held with nails and plates. Plates act like splints to hold large pieces of broken bones together. Nails or rods are used to give structural integrity to long hollow bones of the body. A common rod used in fractures is the intra-medullary rod used in tibial shaft fractures to hold the tibia together. There are several types of screws used in these procedures based on the application and intention such as cancellous screws, cannulated, malleolar, cortical, Schanz screws and LAG screws account for the most common type of devices used with plates. The sockets for screws in plates and nails are specifically angled for increasing stability, reducing hindrance with the functioning of other bones and muscles.
