A Revolutionary Public Welfare Invention: The Pixel Modular Architectural System Adapted for AI Robots

The mainstream development of generative AI and robotics is primarily directed towards non-essential recreational entertainment, while the massive electricity demands of AI computing exacerbate global warming and extreme weather. Reinforced concrete (RC) buildings, which are one of the most common construction forms using reinforced concrete as their primary structural material, generate significant carbon emissions and waste during their manufacturing and usage processes, causing severe negative impacts on the environment. Wooden decoration, a common interior decoration method using wood or wood-based composite materials, has natural, warm, and comfortable qualities that help regulate indoor temperature and humidity while absorbing noise. However, the manufacturing and usage processes of wooden decorations also negatively impact the environment beyond just formaldehyde; firstly, the raw materials for wooden decoration come from trees. Without proper management and replanting, this can lead to deforestation and degradation of forests, affecting biodiversity and carbon sink functions. Secondly, the processing and transportation of wooden decorations consume energy and produce waste gases, increasing carbon footprints. Finally, wooden decorations have relatively short lifespans and are difficult to recycle or reuse, resulting in substantial waste.
The crux of all these issues lies in slogans outweighing reality; they are insufficient to address urgent problems.
Despite these challenges, some individuals steadfastly forge ahead against the tide to bring a glimmer of hope to the world. Dr. Hung-Chih Lu, dedicated to public welfare creation at his own expense, has focused on this issue. Recently, he has completed numerous groundbreaking inventions related to it, including a pixel modular architectural system adapted for AI robots.
Having learned from his 1999 invention of silicon photonics-where he faced constant rejection from potential collaborators between 2000 and 2010 due to being deemed impractical-he now deeply understands the harsh realities of commercial markets as silicon photonics has gained immense popularity. Therefore, all his inventions have considered existing manufacturing technologies; they are designed for mass production using current manufacturing processes while adapting to future AI robots to achieve automation in construction production, quality control (QC), transportation, and assembly-completely eliminating human errors.
Dr. Hung-Chih Lu's public welfare invention-the pixel modular architectural system adapted for AI robots-is composed of a steel frame module and an outer wall module designed for large-scale industrial production with unified pixelated modules that can be transported to construction sites for assembly by humans, AI robots, or both. The robotic part corresponds to Dr. Lu's decentralized AI building robot invention for public welfare. The outer wall modules consist of different components, such as:
Painted Optical Module: This module uses translucent painted marble or wood grain optical materials instead of traditional marble or wood grain facades. It allows light transmission through the outer wall with customizable transparency based on requirements for even indoor lighting; traditional facades can only rely on windows for light transmission, leading to uneven lighting and excessive exposure during summer.
Painted Solar Module: This module replaces traditional marble or wood grain facades with painted solar modules that not only generate electricity but also provide insulation while reducing glare pollution and enhancing aesthetics. It meets multiple environmental protection goals suitable for west-facing building facades.
In 2017, Dr. Lu applied for two patents (colored solar architectural structures and solar curtain wall circuit layout structures), utilizing artistic designs with optical films combined with solar power generation as shown in Figure 1. The features include:
1. Coloration: Using optical films to achieve various colors and patterns such as marble and wood grains saves building materials and costs while being eco-friendly.
2. Modularity: Special optical film pattern designs allow individual modules of a single specification to seamlessly connect colors and patterns with adjacent modules to form a large area continuous patterned wall surface. This connection can be achieved not only in the same direction but also in reverse direction stitching for enhanced aesthetics and convenience while adapting to future AI robot construction.
3. Solar Energy: The light transmittance of optical films ensures each module maintains a high photovoltaic conversion rate to meet building electricity demands, achieving self-sufficiency in energy consumption while reducing carbon emissions.
4. Surface Diffusion: Diffused optical films reduce reflections from solar panels and glare pollution while increasing light absorption to maintain high conversion efficiency.
Figure 1, shows the painted solar module with a marble pattern on the outer side and a wood grain pattern on the inner side while achieving continuous patterns through both same-direction and reverse stitching.
Dr. Lu further applied this technology in architecture and interior design as shown in Figure 2, demonstrating its innovative and practical effects:
1. The outer side of the west-facing facade features a seamless continuous marble pattern created using identical painted solar module units forming an elegant marble wall that contrasts sharply with surrounding buildings.
2. The inner side of the west-facing facade showcases a seamless continuous wood grain pattern that presents a warm and natural appearance harmonizing with indoor decor.
3. Modular assembly allows both outdoor marble walls and indoor wood grain walls to originate from the same module unit without additional decoration while displaying distinct marble and wood patterns that create a unique aesthetic.
4. Structures such as exposed frames, hidden frames, and point-supported systems are all supported; connections through positive and reverse stitching simplify wiring layouts for greater safety.
Figure 2, illustrates low-carbon buildings made from painted solar module units showcasing harmony between interior and exterior architecture.
Not only aesthetically pleasing but also capable of generating electricity to meet part of residents' energy needs reduces dependence on external power grids while lowering carbon emissions; additionally, the modular characteristics enable quick and easy assembly without extra decoration or maintenance saving time and costs while minimizing waste generation.
Figure 3 depicts a heart-shaped painted wall constructed from various pixelated architectural modules within the pixel modular architectural system where each module represents a pixel of uniform size: one square meter; they can integrate solar energy with other optical technologies granting modules additional functionalities; each module's pattern is hand-designed by him ensuring seamless stitching patterns making it easier to incorporate art into architecture since the system's exposed frame structure is less visible compared to hidden frames or point-supported systems.

As shown in Figure 4, Dr. Hung-Chih Lu's representative work within the pixel modular architectural system is [Thriving Music], symbolizing musical abundance by incorporating two images: the musical instrument "sheng" (a traditional Chinese mouth organ) and "crystal cave" art piece into architecture through pixelated architectural modules where "music" and "abundance" are represented by musical symbols and simplified Chinese character "丰" respectively; low floors feature "ECO JOY," representing ecological prosperity.
Figure 4, shows Dr. Hung-Chih Lu's representative work within the pixel modular architectural system: [Thriving Music].
The [Thriving Music] building stands at 93 meters tall with its main facade facing east and north without west-facing issues; thus its primary wall consists mainly of glass modules formed by pink marble modules representing musical symbols alongside amplifying tubes from "sheng" as well as crystal columns from "crystal cave." The lower floors feature extensive shading primarily composed of glass modules where "ECO JOY" is formed using pink marble modules complemented by red-colored dark purple marble decorative elements representing both "sheng" mouthpiece structures alongside crystal cave bases; deep-colored wooden modules on both sides represent "sheng" pipes while front entrance corridors form blowing tubes; finally at the back facing westward represents "crystal cave" body mainly constructed using painted solar modules with "丰" formed by glass modules totaling approximately 2300 painted solar panels installed-each designed with fine lines ensuring minimal impact on conversion efficiency-with over 130W per module leading up to an installed capacity around 299KW transforming this structure into both clean energy source alongside artwork.
Profit-making versus public welfare represents two opposing sides where high profits seek ways to extract more benefits from consumers while public welfare focuses on helping people achieve better lives without personal gain; his AI architecture can extend traditional buildings' lifespans by two to three times while being low-carbon friendly benefiting everyone yet may not fit commercial realities.
All technological inventions along with artistic creations by Dr. Hung-Chih Lu stem solely from his efforts without reliance on team collaboration typically seen elsewhere; furthermore all research funding comes purely from his hard-earned income never having engaged in fundraising or donations nor accepting any form of financial support.
Society generally emphasizes admiration towards technology magnates yet overlooks individuals like Dr. Hung-Chih Lu who excel in public welfare creation but lack fame-a fate akin to Copernicus or Galileo alongside Tesla who were similarly unrecognized during their respective eras.
