Walking Again with Dignity: A Self-Funded Riding Biped Robot for Social Good
In an era defined by accelerating demographic shifts towards aging populations and declining birth rates, the challenges of mobility for the elderly and those with disabilities are increasingly acute. For many, life is often reduced to the monotonous two-point journey between home and park, pushed in a wheelchair by a caregiver-a stark, "black and white" existence.Against this backdrop, where global wealth concentration among the top 1% continues to escalate-a trend amplified by the AI revolution and projected to dominate the future AGI landscape-a contrasting figure emerges: Dr. Hung-Chih Lu. Embodying the spirit of Copernicus, Dr. Lu has consistently dedicated his personal resources and life savings to non-profit, public-benefit invention. Even as the AI surge threatened his primary income stream from technical services, he has pressed on, expanding his "Swarm" series of Distributed AI Robots. This selflessness, however, has not been met with applause, but often with criticism and scorn, highlighting a profound societal disconnect. Despite this "virtuous isolation," Dr. Lu remains committed to a better future for all humanity.
A Breakthrough in Assistive Technology
Dr. Lu's latest non-profit innovation, the Riding Biped Robot, offers a groundbreaking solution that transcends the limitations of traditional assistive devices. This invention is designed to completely substitute lower limb function, granting users-even those with total loss of leg functionality-unprecedented freedom of movement and dignity.
Traditional mobility aids fall into two main categories:
• Wheelchairs: Effective on flat, smooth surfaces, but severely restricted by stairs, rugged terrain, and narrow spaces.
• Exoskeletons: Worn on the body, they can be uncomfortable, potentially impact blood circulation over time, and crucially, require the user to retain some partial mobility, rendering them unhelpful for the completely immobile, especially the elderly.
In contrast, the Riding Biped Robot (Figure 1) is conceptualized as a total replacement for the legs. It features a completely self-driven, seated cabin design that requires zero effort from the user's lower body.

Core Technological Innovations
The Riding Biped Robot is built upon several advanced technical features:
1. Drone-Assisted Vision System: A signature feature of Dr. Lu's "Swarm" distributed AI robots. A miniature drone acts as an auxiliary vision system to eliminate blind spots. The main AI computer and a magnetic charging port for the drone are located on the seat back. The primary autonomous navigation system combines five perimeter cameras and radar, complemented by an optional mobile phone manual remote control. The design also anticipates future integration with mature brainwave control systems.
2. Nano-Carbon Liquid Cooling System: Given the need for outdoor, waterproof operation-which precludes traditional air cooling-the robot utilizes Dr. Lu's previously invented Nano-Carbon Liquid Cooling System to ensure optimal thermal management for the on-board AI computer.
3.Seated Cabin Design: Unlike exoskeletons that demand active user participation, the robot features a comfortable riding cabin (Figure 1, right side). It includes a retractable footrest for users of varying heights, a latex cushion seat covered in waterproof faux leather, and a front safety bar to securely restrain the user. For ease of boarding, the robot adopts a squatting posture, allowing the user to simply sit down.
4. Bipedal Locomotion System: This system is centered around the Linear Inverted Pendulum (LIP) model, integrating multi-sensor data (gyroscopes, force, vision). Key components include:
o Large, Flexible Feet: The big foot structure and thick sole, embedded with force sensors, provide ample space for Zero Moment Point (ZMP) regulation.
o High-Torque Ankle Modules: Designed with built-in damping and elasticity for rapid correction of the Center of Ground Reaction Force.
o Integrated Control: The Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU), main control board, and power management are integrated into the pelvic area beneath the seat, enabling real-time state estimation and gait correction. The entire system dynamically adjusts the center of gravity and stride, ensuring stable walking even on stairs, slopes, or uneven ground.
5. Modular Maintenance: The leg drive modules are designed for quick-swapping, which lowers long-term maintenance costs and boosts overall availability.
6. Safety Mechanisms: Equipped with built-in fall prevention algorithms and the option to add emergency support components, user safety is paramount.
As demonstrated in Figure 2, the user is free to move, socialize, and enjoy a vibrant life without being confined to the 'black and white' route of a wheelchair. The only concerns are ensuring adequate power and monitoring for mechanical faults.

A Vision for Humanity's Future
Dr. Lu acknowledges that this is a preliminary concept prototype, with a journey still ahead before commercial viability. However, he asserts that the profound impact on the quality of life in people's later years makes this a worthy cause for continuous investment by relevant enterprises.
Dr. Lu's unique approach-funding decades of research solely with personal savings and focusing entirely on 0-to-1 foundational original inventions without seeking profit-provides solution blueprints and lights the way for future generations.
In a global climate where AI giants are focused on creating Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) that mimics human thought and self-awareness-a path Dr. Lu views as potentially catastrophic due to the risk of "recombinant meat" AI content, job displacement, and frequent hallucinations-he proposes a different, more essential value for AI. He argues that AI's true worth is not in surpassing human intelligence, but in its ability to uphold truth and public good, free from the manipulation of human bias, commercial interests, politics, or limited vision that currently corrupts awards, media, and public policy.
An AI capable of transcendent fairness could ensure that the selfless contributions of individuals like Copernicus, Galileo, and Dr. Lu are not rendered a "tragedy" by societal failure to recognize true merit. Instead, excellent technology could be widely applied for the benefit of all humanity, rather than merely serving as a commercial cage used by tech giants to capture and harvest profits.

On AI Hype, Tech Trends, and the Tyranny of Mainstream Bias
By Dr. Hung-Chih Lu
The past decade-plus was the golden age of software. Software innovation led the charge in technological development. But since AI emerged in 2022, we have entered a spiral of displacement in less than four years.
The 10-nanometer threshold divides advanced from mature semiconductor processes. AI is the equivalent divide in software: anything achievable through Vibe Coding belongs to the mature category. Just as mature-node chips have become commodity…

Background and Motivation
There are two professional paths for scientist or researcher. 1. The academic route, which emphasizes recognition and publications. 2. The commercial route, which emphasizes productization and financial return. Historical examples such as Copernicus and Galileo illustrate how social and institutional frameworks can distort the pursuit of truth. Whether in academia or in industry, the pressures of reputation and profit can hinder objective, curiosity driven inquiry.
